Frequently asked questions about the van APK

No need to click: every answer is right here for you.

How much does a van APK cost?

At our garage, the APK for a van costs € 125, including VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW. This applies to diesel, petrol and electric vans, also when a particle counter test is needed. For an LPG van, please call us for the price. If you combine the APK with a major service, the APK is free. Repairs are not included.

What is a grey registration (grijs kenteken)?

A grijs kenteken, or grey registration, means your vehicle is registered in the Netherlands as a commercial vehicle, such as a van. The name comes from the colour of the old registration papers. The number plate itself is yellow, just like on a car. You can check the registration on the RDW website with your number plate. For a van, the vehicle type is shown as bedrijfsauto (commercial vehicle).

Is my Caddy or Transporter a car or a van for the APK?

That depends on how it is registered, not on the model. If it is registered as a van, the van APK of € 125 applies. If it is registered as a passenger car, as many Caddys with rear seats are, the APK costs € 50 or € 60. Book a car on our car APK booking page.

How often does a van need an APK?

According to the RDW (in Dutch), that depends on the fuel. A diesel or gas van needs its first APK after three years and then every year. A petrol or electric van needs its first APK after four years, then twice every two years, and every year after that. The expiry date is on the RDW website and in the reminder letter from the RDW.

When should I book the APK for my van?

Book well before the expiry date. You can have the APK done up to two months before the expiry date without losing any time, because the new expiry date is counted from the old one. Booking early also leaves time for repairs, so your van is not off the road for longer than needed. Book your van APK online.

What is the particle counter test?

According to the RDW (in Dutch), the particle counter test has been part of the APK since 1 January 2023 for diesel vehicles with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). It measures whether the filter still works. Many modern diesel vans have a factory-fitted DPF. The test is included in the € 125. Please note that we do not clean, repair or replace particulate filters.

Does an electric van need an APK?

Yes. An electric van needs an APK too. There is no emissions test, but we do check the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights and the rest of the van. The APK for an electric van costs € 125. Our mechanics are GMTO certified for safe work on the high-voltage systems of hybrid and electric vehicles.

What do you check on a van?

The same as on a car, such as the brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, wipers, seat belts and emissions. On a van, we also check the body, the load area and any body conversion for defects or loose parts that can affect road safety. Please make sure the load area is accessible.

What happens if my van fails the APK?

You get a list of the points that need repairing, and we tell you what the repair costs. Small points can often be repaired during the inspection, if you agree. We only carry out repairs after you agree. After the repair, the van is inspected again. Please note that we do not replace or adjust lights or headlights. Read more about a failed APK (in Dutch).

The APK of my van has expired. What should I do?

Book an appointment as soon as possible. According to the ANWB (in Dutch), you may then only drive straight to the inspection, within two months of the expiry date and with your appointment confirmation with you. Read more on our APK expired page.

Can I combine the APK with a service?

Yes. We carry out the APK and the service in one visit, so your van is off the road only once. If you combine the APK with a major service, the APK is free. Do you have several vans? Read more about van repair and fleet maintenance.

When do I bring my van, and can I do the APK on Saturday?

On the day of your appointment, bring your van between 8.00 and 8.30. We call you when it is ready. The APK is on weekdays only, because APK results can only be registered with the RDW on weekdays. On Saturday we do repairs, servicing, tyres and air conditioning, but no APK.

My van is long or high, or has a body conversion. Can you test it?

We test vans of all makes up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass. We have lifts that are suitable for vans up to 3,500 kg. Is your van very long or high, or does it have a special body conversion? Please call us on +31 10 479 00 00 before you book, and we will tell you whether it fits.

My van has a foreign number plate. Can I get an APK?

No. The APK is only for vehicles registered in the Netherlands. We can service and repair vans with a foreign number plate. Read more on our van repair page.
