The short answer

Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde services and repairs hybrid cars and plug-in hybrids of almost every make, with GMTO-certified technicians who are qualified to work safely on the high-voltage system. Alongside the standard maintenance (oil, filters and brakes), we check the high-voltage system, the hybrid battery and the cooling according to the manufacturer’s schedule. You hear in advance, by phone or in the workshop, what it costs, and we only carry out extra work with your approval.

To book an appointment, call +31 10 479 00 00. Bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am.

Why a hybrid car needs different maintenance

A hybrid car combines two drive systems: a combustion engine and one or more electric motors with a high-voltage battery. All the familiar maintenance is still needed, such as changing the oil, replacing filters and checking the brakes and tyres. On top of that come a few checks that only apply to a hybrid.

The high-voltage system runs at several hundred volts. Handling it the wrong way can be fatal. That is why work on this system should only be carried out by technicians trained for it, following set safety procedures. An important standard here is NEN 9140, for work on or near electric vehicles.

The hybrid battery also needs attention. The condition of the battery affects your car’s fuel consumption and performance.

The braking system is a special case. In a hybrid car, part of the braking is often done by the electric motor. This is called regenerative braking. It recovers braking energy and stores it in the high-voltage battery. As a result, the mechanical brakes are sometimes used less, so the brake pads usually wear more slowly.

That sounds good, but brake discs can then rust sooner, and brake calipers or guide pins can seize from lack of use. That is why we check the brakes on a hybrid car with extra care.

What does hybrid car maintenance include?

During a service for your hybrid car, depending on the manufacturer’s schedule, we check and maintain things such as:

  • Regular maintenance: oil change (in Dutch), replacing filters, topping up fluids and checking the tyres.
  • A visual check of the high-voltage system and the wiring for damage, and an insulation test where the service schedule requires one.
  • An indication of the condition of the hybrid battery, based on data from the battery management system: the state of health (SoH).
  • The braking system: both the regenerative braking and the mechanical brakes.
  • The cooling of the hybrid battery, the inverter and the combustion engine. Is the heater staying cold? Then read about a heater blowing cold air.
  • In a hybrid car, the 12-volt battery switches the system on. If that battery is weak, the car sometimes will not start, even when the high-voltage battery is charged enough.
  • Reading fault codes and, if needed, further investigation with suitable diagnostic equipment.
  • If you wish, we combine the service with the APK (MOT). That is a separate statutory inspection and not part of the maintenance. With a major service, the APK is free, except for Tesla and Polestar.

Why choose trained, GMTO-certified technicians?

Not every garage is equipped to work on a hybrid car. Work on the high-voltage system calls for proven expertise, set safety procedures and the right protective equipment. Our technicians are trained for this and hold GMTO certification for work on hybrid and electric cars. You can check this registration in the public GMTO register.

In practice this means we work with suitable diagnostic equipment, follow set safety procedures when working on the high-voltage system and discuss the result of every check with you, including any next steps. This way we pinpoint a fault before any parts are replaced.

As an independent garage, we service your car according to the manufacturer’s specifications and keep careful records of the maintenance and the parts used. Servicing by an independent garage therefore does not automatically void your manufacturer’s warranty. The warranty terms for the hybrid battery in particular can differ by make, model, year and warranty programme.

How much does hybrid car maintenance cost?

A persistent myth is that maintenance on a hybrid car is by definition much more expensive. That does not have to be the case. The regular part of the service hardly differs from that of a car with only a petrol or diesel engine. The price mainly depends on the make, the model and what needs doing.

For some work, an independent garage can be cheaper than a main dealer. You hear in advance, by phone or in the workshop, what the agreed work costs for your make, model and year, including parts, labour and VAT.

Extra work, further diagnosis and parts that only turn out to be needed during the check are not included. We discuss those with you first and only carry them out with your approval. You can see the replaced parts on request.

For a service, repair or APK on your hybrid car, call us for an indicative price for your make and model. We service hybrids of almost every make, such as Toyota, Lexus, Kia, Hyundai and Honda. The page for your make explains what happens during the service. For the APK, we agree the price of the inspection in advance. Repairs needed for the car to pass are not included.

How we work

  1. You describe your problem or what maintenance you want.
  2. We assess what your car needs according to the service schedule, including the checks on the high-voltage system and the hybrid battery.
  3. You get a quote in advance for the agreed work. We only start once you approve.
  4. A trained, GMTO-certified technician carries out the work according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  5. We explain what we have done. You can see the replaced parts on request.

Frequently asked questions about hybrid maintenance

No need to click. All the answers are already open below.

Can any garage service my hybrid car?

No. The regular part, such as oil, filters and tyres, can often be done at any garage. Work on the high-voltage system calls for proven expertise, set safety procedures and the right protective equipment, and not every garage is equipped for that. Our technicians are trained for it and GMTO certified, so you can come to us for the complete maintenance.

Is maintenance on a hybrid car more expensive than on a car without a hybrid system?

No. That does not have to be the case. The regular part of the maintenance differs little from that of a car with only a petrol or diesel engine. The price mainly depends on the make, the model and the service interval. You hear in advance, by phone or in the workshop, what it costs for your car.

Do you also service plug-in hybrids?

Yes. We service and repair hybrids and plug-in hybrids of almost every make. Our GMTO-certified technicians carry out the checks on the high-voltage system according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

How long does a hybrid battery last?

That differs by make, model, battery type and use. Many hybrid batteries work well for years, but the condition has to be assessed car by car. We read the data from the battery management system. This gives an indication of the state of health (SoH) at that moment.

It cannot give a precise prediction of the remaining life, but it does give a good picture of the battery’s current condition.

Does your hybrid car not start while the hybrid battery is charged? Then the cause may be the 12-volt battery. Read more about car battery testing.

Do I have to go to the main dealer to service my hybrid car?

No. Under European rules, your manufacturer’s warranty does not automatically lapse if an independent garage services your car. The condition is that this is done according to the manufacturer’s specifications, with suitable parts and fluids, and that it is properly recorded. We keep careful records of the maintenance and the parts used.

The warranty terms, for example for the hybrid battery, differ by make and warranty programme. If in doubt, check them or ask us.

Can I also have the APK done on my hybrid car with you?

Yes. We are RDW-approved for APK inspections and also inspect hybrid and electric cars. You can combine the APK with a service in the same appointment. With a major service, the APK is free, except for Tesla and Polestar. You can also book the APK online.

Passing the APK does not mean that all maintenance has been done, and it is not a full technical inspection of the car.

How do I book an appointment for maintenance or repair?

Call us on +31 10 479 00 00. Bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am. We are open Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 17.30 and on Saturday from 9.00 to 15.00.
