How it works

Changing to winter tyres works like this:

  • Call us with your number plate
  • Tell us whether the tyres are on wheels and whether your car has tyre pressure sensors
  • You hear the price first and when you can bring the car
  • You bring the car with your winter tyres
  • We change the tyres, check them and set the tyre pressure
  • We call you when the car is ready. You take your summer tyres home

Please note: we do not offer tyre storage. Bring your winter tyres to the appointment and take your summer tyres home again.

Why winter tyres?

A winter tyre has a softer rubber compound and many small cuts in the tread. That keeps its grip in the cold, also on wet roads, not only in snow.

Below about seven degrees, a summer tyre gets harder. It then has less grip and needs a longer distance to stop. That is why many drivers change to winter or all-season tyres in October or November.

A worn or old tyre gives less grip. That is why we check the tread, the age and any damage when we change your tyres.

What we do during the tyre change

  • Swap the wheels, or fit the tyres on the wheels
  • Balance the wheels when we fit tyres on them
  • Check the tread, the age and any damage
  • Set the tyre pressure
  • Tighten the wheel bolts to the correct torque
  • Advise on wheel alignment if the tyres wear unevenly

We only supply new tyres after you agree.

Frequently asked questions about winter tyres

No need to click: every answer is right here for you.

When should I have my winter tyres fitted?

When the temperature drops towards seven degrees, usually from October. Winter tyres then give more grip than summer tyres, also on cold and wet roads. Garages get busy around the first night frost, so book in good time.

How much does it cost to change winter tyres?

That depends on your situation. If your winter tyres are already on their own wheels, we only swap the wheels. That is the least work and the best value. If the tyres need to be fitted on the wheels, we fit and balance them, which is more work. Call us with your number plate and tell us whether the tyres are on wheels. You hear the price before we start.

Can I wait while you change the tyres?

No, you cannot wait during a tyre change. Bring the car at the agreed time, and we call you when it is ready. On weekdays you can drop off the car between 8.00 and 8.30, if we have agreed this with you.

Can you store my tyres?

No, we do not offer tyre storage. Bring your winter tyres to the appointment and take your summer tyres home again. Store them in a dry, cool and dark place. According to the ANWB (in Dutch), tyres on wheels are best stored lying flat, and loose tyres standing upright in a rack.

My car has tyre pressure sensors. Can you still help?

Yes, we swap the wheels. Please mention it when you book. On many cars, the system learns the sensors in the winter wheels by itself after a short drive, or you reset it through the menu. Your owner’s manual explains how. We do not program or replace sensors. If the warning light stays on, a dealer or tyre specialist can program the sensors.

Are winter tyres compulsory in the Netherlands?

No, winter tyres are not compulsory in the Netherlands. In some other countries they are. In Austria, according to the ANWB (in Dutch), winter tyres are compulsory in wintry conditions between 1 November and 15 April, with at least 4 mm of tread. In Germany, a tyre with only the M+S marking no longer counts as a winter tyre since October 2024, according to Topgear (in Dutch). It needs the alpine symbol: a mountain with a snowflake.

I am driving to the Alps this winter. What do I need?

Check the rules of every country you drive through. For Austria and Germany, use tyres with the alpine symbol and enough tread. In Austria a winter tyre needs at least 4 mm. We check the tread, the age and the symbol on your tyres when we change them, and we tell you if they are not suitable.

Are winter tyres on their own wheels worth it?

According to the ANWB, a separate set of winter wheels is often better value. The change is quicker and saves fitting costs. The tyres and wheels also wear less, because they do not have to come off the wheels each season.

How much tread should winter tyres have?

In the Netherlands, a tyre must have at least 1.6 mm of tread, according to the ANWB. For winter tyres, more tread is wise, and in Austria 4 mm is required. A quick test from the ANWB: put a 2 euro coin in the groove. If the outer ring of the coin disappears into the groove, there is still enough tread.

How old can winter tyres be?

Even a tyre with enough tread becomes hard with age, and then it has less grip. The ANWB advises not to use tyres older than six years. The production date is in the DOT code on the side of the tyre. We check this when we change your tyres and tell you if they need replacing.

Are all-season tyres a good alternative?

For many drivers, yes. With all-season tyres you do not have to change tyres twice a year. If you go skiing, choose all-season tyres with the alpine symbol. In winter, a true winter tyre usually gives more grip, and in summer a summer tyre does. We supply all types of tyres and advise you on what suits your driving.

What do you check during the tyre change?

We check the tread, the age and any damage, such as cuts and bulges. We set the tyre pressure and tighten the wheel bolts to the correct torque. When we fit tyres on wheels, we balance them. If the car pulls to one side or the tyres wear unevenly, we advise a wheel alignment (in Dutch).

Do you change tyres on Saturday?

Yes. We are open on Saturday from 9.00 to 15.00, also for tyre changes. So you do not need to take time off work.

My car has a foreign number plate. Can you change the tyres?

Yes. We change and supply tyres for cars with a foreign number plate too. We also do this for vans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg. You can pay by debit card or in cash. We do not accept credit cards.
