The short answer

Autobedrijf Willemsbrug checks and replaces brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid on all makes in our own workshop at Boterdiep 11 in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde. We first measure what is worn and you hear in advance what the replacement costs. We only carry out extra work if you agree to it.

Often only the brake pads need replacing and we can do the work the same day. Our repairs come with a warranty. When you get the quote, you hear which warranty applies. Make an appointment on +31 10 479 00 00 and have your registration number ready. You drop off the car Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am.

Do you recognise these signs in your brakes?

You often notice worn or poorly working brakes from a noise or from the brake pedal. If the signs are clear, do not wait too long, because your brakes are vital for your safety.

  • Squeaking, whistling or grinding brakes
  • A vibrating or pulsing brake pedal
  • A longer braking distance or a brake pedal that feels soft
  • A metallic, scraping noise when braking
  • A red brake warning light on the dashboard
  • The car pulls to one side when braking

Not sure? Have your brakes checked by us. Replacing them in time is safer and can prevent damage to the brake discs.

Why replace your brakes in time?

Your brakes are an important safety system. Braking creates friction. That makes brake pads and brake discs wear gradually. How fast depends on your car, your driving style and where you drive. In town, brakes wear faster than on the motorway.

If the brake pads are completely worn, the metal of the pads can touch the brake disc. The disc is then damaged and the repair becomes more expensive.

So have your brakes checked in time. We explain what is needed now and what can wait a little longer.

What we do with your brakes

  • Check the brakes and measure the brake pads and brake discs
  • Replace worn brake pads with parts suited to your car
  • Replace brake discs that are too thin or damaged, per axle
  • Check the brake calipers and free them up if needed, where technically possible
  • Check the brake fluid and change it if needed
  • With an electric parking brake, put the rear brakes into service mode using diagnostic equipment
  • Test the brakes after the work, usually with a short test drive

We only do extra work once you agree. When you collect the car, we tell you how to bed in the new brakes. Brake gently for the first 100 km and avoid hard braking where possible. The ANWB gives the same advice.

Brake pads, brake discs and brake fluid

A braking system consists of several parts that work together. This table shows roughly how long brake pads and brake discs last and roughly what replacing them costs on an average car. The figures come from the ANWB pages about brake pads (in Dutch) and brake discs (in Dutch). They are guide figures, not a quote from us.

Lifespan and costs according to the ANWB
Part How long it lasts Costs (guide)
Brake pads With normal use at least 4 years or 60,000 km, but replacement may be needed from 40,000 km Over € 200 per axle, including labour
Brake discs About 100,000 km on average € 300 to € 600 per axle, together with new brake pads

Brake pads

The brake pads press against the brake disc and so slow the car down. On most cars the brake pads wear faster than the brake discs.

Worn brake pads can squeak or grind. But not every noise comes from the brake pads.

Brake discs

The brake discs turn with the wheels. If they are too thin or worn unevenly, the brake pedal can vibrate. We replace brake discs per axle, left and right together, with new brake pads. On a hybrid or electric car the brake discs can rust faster, because the electric motor takes over much of the braking.

Brake fluid

Brake fluid transfers the force from your brake pedal to the brakes. Brake fluid absorbs moisture. That lowers its boiling point, and the brake pedal can start to feel soft during long or hard braking.

Many manufacturers specify changing the brake fluid about every two years. The correct interval is in your car’s service schedule. We check the brake fluid during a service.

We replace brake pads and brake discs for all makes, from Volkswagen, Opel, Ford, Peugeot and Renault to Toyota, BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. We also do this on commercial vehicles, motorhomes and hybrid and electric cars. Our mechanics hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Only brake pads, or brake discs too?

Often not all parts need replacing at the same time. Are only the brake pads worn and are the brake discs still thick enough? Then we only replace the brake pads. If the brake discs do need replacing, new brake pads go in as well. That is needed for the brakes to work properly.

That way you do not pay for parts that are still good. Not sure? Call +31 10 479 00 00 and we will discuss which check or work your car needs.

You can combine your brake replacement with a service for your car, a major service (in Dutch) or an oil change (in Dutch). With a major service the APK (MOT) is free, except for Tesla and Polestar.

Frequently asked questions about brake replacement

Below you will find answers to questions our customers often ask.

When should I have my brakes replaced?

That depends on your car and how you drive. According to the ANWB, brake pads last at least 4 years or 60,000 km with normal use, but replacement may be needed from 40,000 km. Brake discs last about 100,000 km on average. The mileage alone does not tell you enough. Have your brakes checked if you notice problems, during a service or if you are unsure. Squeaking or grinding brakes, a vibrating brake pedal, a longer braking distance or a warning light are reasons not to wait too long.

How much does brake replacement cost?

That depends on your car and on what needs replacing. According to the ANWB, replacing the brake pads on one axle (front or rear) of an average car costs over € 200, including labour. New brake discs with brake pads cost between € 300 and € 600 per axle. These are guide figures, not a quote from us. You hear the price in advance and we only start once you agree. Our repairs come with a warranty. When you get the quote, you hear which warranty applies.

How do I know whether my brake pads or brake discs are worn?

Squeaking or grinding can point to wear, but it can also have another cause. Does it only squeak the first few times you brake after rain or after a night outside? Then it is often a thin layer of rust that soon wears off. On many cars a warning light comes on when the brake pads are nearly worn out. A vibrating brake pedal can come from uneven brake discs, but also from other parts. If the car also pulls to one side when you are not braking, the wheel alignment may be out. We measure the brake pads and brake discs and explain what we see.

Do new brake discs need new brake pads too?

Yes. New brake discs need new brake pads, otherwise the car does not brake properly. The other way round is not needed: if only the brake pads are worn and the brake discs are still thick enough, we only replace the brake pads. That way you do not pay for parts that are still good. We replace brake pads and brake discs per axle, so left and right at the same time. Then the car brakes equally hard on both sides.

How long does brake replacement take?

Brake replacement usually takes a few hours. In many cases we can do it the same day. That depends on the parts, how much needs doing and our schedule. Make an appointment and you will hear in advance how long it takes. You drop off the car Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am.

The red brake warning light is on. Can I keep driving?

No. It is better not to drive on. First check whether the handbrake or the electric parking brake is fully released. If the red brake light is still on after that, the brake fluid may be low or there may be a fault in the braking system. Stop the car in a safe place, check the owner’s manual and call us. We will then discuss whether you can drive to us carefully or whether the car should be towed.

Do the brakes on a hybrid or electric car rust faster?

Yes. That often happens. A hybrid or electric car does much of its braking with the electric motor. The brake discs are then used less and can rust faster. The ANWB advises braking a little harder now and then in a safe place. Also have the brakes checked for rust during a service. Our mechanics hold the GMTO certificate for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Are my brakes checked during the APK?

Yes. During the APK, the inspector checks how well the brakes work and the visible condition of the brake parts. We are an RDW-approved APK station. An APK is not a full check for wear. If we find a defect or wear, we discuss it with you first. Read more about the APK for your car, the APK for your van (up to 3,500 kg) and the APK for your motorhome.
