Switch off the engine safely if you notice these signs

  • A red oil pressure warning light, even if it only comes on briefly
  • Fault code P15A1, P15A8 or P0521
  • A rattling or ticking noise from the engine
  • The warning “Oil pressure fault: stop the vehicle”
  • Brakes that feel heavy, together with engine problems
  • An engine that stutters or loses power

Driving on with an oil pressure fault can cause serious engine damage. Stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so and have it checked. If in doubt, do not drive any further. Have the car brought to us instead. A fault code is a clue, not a diagnosis.

The price includes VAT, labour, the timing belt kit, gaskets, engine oil, the oil filter and cleaning the oil strainer. It does not cover the water pump or any damage that is already there. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then check your engine code and confirm the price.

Why does a wet timing belt fail?

Certain 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines from Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles and Opel have a timing belt that runs in the engine oil. This is called a wet timing belt (belt-in-oil).

Short journeys, old or unsuitable oil and service intervals that are too long can make the belt wear faster. Changing the oil on time, with the oil the manufacturer specifies, helps to protect the belt. If the belt does wear out, particles can come loose. Not every version is built the same way. For example, the mild hybrid PureTech engines from 2023 onwards have a timing chain and no wet belt. That is why we check your registration number, engine code and version in advance.

The risk: the loose particles can end up in the oil and block the oil strainer in the sump. This can make the oil pressure drop. Without enough oil pressure, the engine is not lubricated properly. That can cause serious engine damage.

If the engine warning light is on, or a fault code is stored in the car's memory, we first run a diagnostic check to read it out. That tells us whether the belt is the cause or something else.

For more on the technical side, read our technical guide to PureTech engine problems.

Our approach: we do more than replace the belt. We also remove the sump and clean the oil strainer and the parts of the lubrication system where dirt has collected. If the lubrication system is contaminated, a new belt on its own is usually not enough.
Mechanic topping up the engine oil in a car engine New engine oil and a new oil filter are part of the replacement.

How much does it cost to replace the wet timing belt?

The price depends on the model and engine. It includes VAT, labour, the timing belt kit, gaskets, engine oil, the oil filter and cleaning the oil strainer.

Model and engine Price including VAT
Compact models and versions without a turbo Peugeot 108 1.2, 208, Citroën C1 1.2, C3, Opel Corsa (from 2019) € 995
Crossovers and SUVs with a PureTech engine Peugeot 2008, Citroën C4 Cactus, C3 Aircross, Opel Crossland, Opel Mokka (second generation, from late 2020) € 1,095
Larger models and turbo versions with the 1.2 PureTech Peugeot 308, 3008, 5008 and Partner, Citroën C4, C4 Picasso and Berlingo, DS 3, DS 4 and DS 7, Opel Grandland € 1,250

If your compact car or crossover has a turbo engine, the higher price may apply. We will tell you this in advance.

What is not included in the price?

  • The water pump. If the manufacturer specifies replacement, or the pump is worn, we discuss this with you in advance.
  • Damage that is already there, for example to the oil pump or the turbo. If we find any, we first discuss with you what is needed.
  • Extra work. We only do this once you agree.

Once we have checked your registration number, engine code and version, we confirm which price applies to your car. If you already have a quote or diagnosis from another garage, you can ask us for a second opinion before you decide.

Is your model not listed?

Your car may still fall within these prices. That depends on the year of manufacture, the version and the engine code.

Frequently asked questions about the wet timing belt

No need to click. All the answers are shown in full below.

How much does it cost to replace a wet timing belt?

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, replacing the wet timing belt costs € 995, € 1,095 or € 1,250. The price depends on the model and engine. It includes VAT, labour, the timing belt kit, gaskets, engine oil, the oil filter and cleaning the oil strainer. It does not cover the water pump or any damage that is already there.

Which cars have a wet timing belt?

Certain 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines from Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles and Opel have a wet timing belt. Examples are the Peugeot 208, 2008, 308 and 3008, the Citroën C3 and C4 and the Opel Corsa (from 2019), Crossland and Grandland. Not every version has the same engine. The mild hybrid PureTech engines from 2023 onwards have a timing chain and no wet belt. So call us with your registration number and we will check it for you.

How long does the repair take?

The repair usually takes one working day. You drop the car off in the morning and collect it at the end of the afternoon. We also remove the sump and clean the oil strainer. If we find extra contamination or damage, the repair may take longer. We will let you know as soon as possible.

Can I keep driving with an oil pressure warning?

No. If the red oil pressure warning light comes on, or you see the warning “Oil pressure fault: stop the vehicle”, switch off the engine as soon as it is safe to do so. Driving on can cause serious engine damage. If in doubt, do not drive any further and have the car brought to us.

Why is my oil pressure warning light on?

A red oil pressure warning light can have several causes: too little oil, a faulty sensor, a problem with the oil pump or contamination of the lubrication system. On certain PureTech engines, wear of the wet timing belt can play a part. Switch off the engine as soon as it is safe to do so and have the car checked first. You can read more in our guide to oil pressure faults.

Is the water pump included in the price?

No. The pump is not part of the price. If the manufacturer specifies replacement, or the pump is worn, we discuss this with you in advance.

Will the manufacturer pay for the replacement?

Yes. That is possible in certain cases. Stellantis has a scheme for older generations of the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engine. Subject to conditions, the manufacturer covers the costs if the timing belt wears too early or if the engine uses too much oil, up to ten years or 180,000 kilometres. The assessment and the repair go through an authorised repairer for the brand. A repair at our garage is not covered by this scheme. So first ask a main dealer whether your car qualifies. If your car does not qualify, we will be happy to help.

What warranty do I get?

You get a warranty on our repairs. When we give you the quote, you will hear which warranty applies. Conditions set by the manufacturer or the supplier may also apply to parts. If we find damage that was already there, for example turbo damage caused by driving on for too long with an oil pressure fault, we tell you in advance. That damage is not included in the price of the belt replacement.
