Do your tyres need replacing?

Good tyres decide your grip and your braking distance. Look out for these signs:

  • Little tread: less than 1.6 mm is not allowed. We advise replacing at around 3 mm (summer) or 4 mm (winter), because grip on a wet road drops with less tread
  • Cracks, bulges or a damaged sidewall
  • Uneven wear, for example only on the inner or outer edge
  • Vibration in the steering wheel or in the car
  • Tyres eight years old or more, even with enough tread. Have us check them
  • Less grip or a longer braking distance, especially in the rain

Unsure about your tyres? Have them checked by us. We measure the tread depth and look at the age and condition of the tyres.

Why good tyres matter so much

Your tyres are the only contact between the car and the road. All steering, braking and accelerating comes together on four patches, each about the size of a hand.

Worn or unsuitable tyres make the braking distance longer, give less grip in the rain and make the car feel unsettled. Fuel consumption and wear on other parts can also go up.

We help you find the right tyre for your car, your mileage and your budget. We fit the tyres, balance the wheels and check the tyre pressure.

Our tyre service

Seasonal changeover, balancing and alignment

A good tyre service is more than fitting. This table shows which tyre works best when. According to the ANWB, you notice the difference between summer and winter tyres from about 7 °C.

Summer, winter or all-season tyre
Tyre When Strong in Keep in mind
Summer tyre At temperatures above about 7 °C Grip and a short braking distance on dry and wet roads in the warmer months Gets harder in the cold and then gives less grip
Winter tyre At temperatures below about 7 °C Grip in cold, snow, black ice and wet leaves Wears faster if you drive on it in summer
All-season tyre All year round No seasonal changeover needed A compromise between summer and winter. Choose one with the alpine symbol if you drive abroad in winter

Seasonal changeover

In autumn you switch to winter tyres and in spring back to summer tyres. We change the tyres, check the tread and set the tyre pressure. We do not replace or program tyre pressure sensors (TPMS). Read more about the changeover on our page about changing to winter tyres in Rotterdam.

Balancing and alignment

After fitting, we balance the wheels so you feel no vibration. Are your tyres wearing unevenly or does the car pull to one side? Then we align the wheels. If the front tyres wear faster than the rear ones, swapping the wheels from front to rear can help, as long as your car has the same tyre size front and rear.

We supply tyres in every price range, from budget brands to Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli and Goodyear. We do this for all car makes, including vans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg and electric cars.

Summer tyres, winter tyres or all-season tyres?

We help you choose based on your mileage, where you drive and what you want. Summer tyres give the best grip when it is warmer than about 7 °C. Winter tyres give more grip in cold, snow and black ice. All-season tyres are a compromise for anyone who does not want to change over.

In the Netherlands, winter tyres are not compulsory. In Germany you must have winter tyres in wintry conditions. Since 1 October 2024, only a tyre with the alpine symbol, a mountain with a snowflake, counts there. Going on a skiing holiday? Then choose winter tyres or all-season tyres with that symbol. Call +31 10 479 00 00 and we will advise you.

More about tyres: size, age and care

Here you can read how to find the tyre size and the age of a tyre, and what to do about a puncture or a warning light.

How to measure the tread depth yourself

You can measure the tread depth with a coin. The ANWB advises a 1 euro coin for summer tyres and a 2 euro coin for winter tyres. Put the coin into the groove of the tyre. If you can still see the outer rim of the coin above the groove, it is time for new tyres. Many tyres also have wear indicators: small blocks in the grooves.

How to read the tyre size

The tyre size is on the sidewall of your tyre, for example 205/55 R16 91V. 205 is the width in millimetres and 55 is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of that width. R stands for radial tyre and 16 for the rim size in inches. 91 is the load index and V the speed rating. Not sure? Give us your registration number and we will look up the right size for you.

The best time for winter tyres

According to the ANWB, you notice the difference between summer and winter tyres from about 7 °C. In the Netherlands that is usually from October or November. Book in good time, because at the first cold spell many people want to change over at once. In spring we change back to summer tyres. Read more about changing to winter tyres.

How to tell how old a tyre is

You can see the age of a tyre from the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits give the week and year of production. 2321, for example, means week 23 of 2021. A tyre with enough tread also ages. The rubber gets harder and can crack. So have tyres that are eight years old or more checked carefully.

The EU tyre label

The EU tyre label shows how fuel-efficient a tyre is, how well it brakes on a wet road and how much noise it makes. Some tyres also have a symbol for snow or ice. We help you read the label.

Two new tyres on the front or rear

If you replace two tyres, tyre manufacturers usually advise fitting the best tyres on the rear. That gives more grip when braking in a bend. We advise you on what suits your car.

Swapping tyres from front to rear

On many cars you can swap the tyres from front to rear. The front tyres often wear faster than the rear ones. By swapping the wheels from front to rear now and then, the tyres wear more evenly and last longer together. Some manufacturers advise this in the owner’s manual, Volvo for example after about 5,000 km and then every 10,000 km. It is not possible if the tyres are a different size front and rear. Directional tyres stay on the same side of the car. During a seasonal changeover or tyre check, we look at whether it is possible and worthwhile for your car. You hear the cost in advance.

The tyre pressure warning light is on

Stop in a safe place and check whether a tyre is soft. Then check the tyre pressure at a petrol station. The correct pressure is in the owner’s manual and often on a sticker in the door pillar or the fuel filler flap. On many cars you need to reset the system yourself after inflating, through the menu or a button. If the light stays on, a sensor may be faulty or may need resetting after a changeover. We check the tyre pressure and set it correctly. We do not replace or program tyre pressure sensors (TPMS). A tyre specialist can help you with that.

Tyres for an electric car

An electric car does not necessarily need a tyre with an EV label, but it does need a tyre with the right load index. Because an electric car is heavier, the manufacturer often specifies a tyre with a higher load index. We look up the right tyre for you with your registration number. Our mechanics hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Having a puncture repaired

A punctured tyre can sometimes be repaired. A small hole from a nail or screw in the tread can often be repaired, as long as the hole is no bigger than about 6 mm. Damage to the sidewall usually cannot be repaired. If you have driven on a flat tyre, it is often damaged on the inside. So drive as little as possible on a punctured tyre. Call us and you will hear whether your tyre can be repaired or whether you need a new one. Can you not drive any further? Read what to do in case of a breakdown.

Tyres for a van or motorhome

A van often needs a C tyre. The C stands for commercial. This kind of tyre has a sturdier construction and can carry more weight than a standard car tyre. There are also special motorhome tyres, recognisable by the letters CP. We look up which tyre is specified for your van or motorhome with your registration number. We work on vans and motorhomes up to 3,500 kg.

Frequently asked questions about tyres

Below you will find answers to questions our customers often ask.

When should I replace my tyres?

In the Netherlands, a tyre must have at least 1.6 mm of tread. Grip on a wet road drops well before that limit. So we advise replacing summer tyres at about 3 mm and winter tyres at about 4 mm. Also replace a tyre if it has cracks, bulges or a damaged sidewall. Not sure? Have us check the tyres.

How much does a new tyre or a set of tyres cost?

That depends on your tyre size and the brand you choose. We supply tyres in every price range, from budget brands to Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli and Goodyear. You hear the price in advance, including fitting, balancing and disposal of the old tyres. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number for a quote.

Are winter tyres compulsory?

No. In the Netherlands, winter tyres are not compulsory. In a number of other countries they are. In Germany you must have winter tyres in wintry conditions, such as snow or black ice. Since 1 October 2024, only a tyre with the alpine symbol counts there: a mountain with a snowflake. A tyre marked only M+S is then no longer enough. Going on a skiing holiday? Then check the rules in your destination country beforehand.

Are all-season tyres a good choice?

Yes. For many people in the Netherlands they are a good choice. You do not have to change over twice a year. An all-season tyre is a compromise, though: in summer and in real winter cold it performs less well than a summer or winter tyre. If you drive abroad in winter, choose an all-season tyre with the alpine symbol. We help you choose.

What is the difference between wheel balancing and wheel alignment?

Balancing makes a wheel turn evenly, so you feel no vibration in the steering wheel. Alignment adjusts the position of the wheels, so the tyres wear evenly and the car drives straight. With new tyres we balance the wheels. We advise alignment if the tyres wear unevenly or the car pulls to one side. Read more about wheel alignment.

How long does it take to change my tyres?

If you bring your second set of tyres on rims, we swap complete wheels. That is usually done within an hour. If the tyres still need fitting on the rims and balancing, it takes longer. When you book, you hear how long it takes and whether you can wait. The ANWB advises having the wheel nuts retightened after about 100 km.

Can you store my tyres?

No. We do not store tyres. You bring your summer or winter tyres to the appointment yourself and take them home again. Store them somewhere dry, cool and out of the sun. If they are on rims, it is best to stack them flat or hang them on a wheel rack.

Can I also have my tyres changed on Saturday?

Yes. We are open on Saturday from 9.00 to 15.00, and Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 17.30. Book in advance on +31 10 479 00 00, especially in October, November and spring. If you choose new tyres, we can order them for you in advance.
