Car air conditioning in Rotterdam

Aircon blowing warm? We find out why before we put any gas in. An English-speaking, F-gas certified garage in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, with the total price agreed before we start.

The short answer

A car air conditioning system is sealed. If it stops cooling, it is not simply low on gas: the refrigerant has escaped somewhere. So before we add anything, we check whether your system still holds pressure. If it doesn’t, we trace the leak with a nitrogen test instead of selling you a refill that lasts three weeks. A full aircon service starts from € 120 (R134a) or € 180 (R1234yf), all in, and you always hear the total price before we start. We are F-gas certified for both refrigerants, GMTO certified for hybrid and electric cars, and yes, we speak English. Call +31 10 479 00 00.

Why your aircon is not cold

These are the complaints we hear most often. Recognise any of them?

  • The aircon blows air, but it never gets properly cold
  • It only cools while you drive, and stops cooling in slow traffic
  • It was refilled somewhere else and went warm again within weeks or months
  • A musty or damp smell comes out of the vents when you switch it on
  • You hear rattling or clicking as soon as the aircon engages
  • The compressor does not engage at all, and nothing happens

Why we don’t simply top it up

Plenty of places will happily put refrigerant into your car for a low price and send you on your way. We don’t, and there are three good reasons.

It is a sealed system. Air conditioning does not consume refrigerant the way an engine consumes fuel. A small natural loss of a few percent per year is normal. If your aircon is empty after one or two seasons, the gas is escaping through a leak, and a refill simply escapes through the same hole.

It costs you more, not less. When the refrigerant leaks away, so does the oil that lubricates the compressor. A dry compressor can seize, and replacing one runs into hundreds of euros. The cheap refill is the expensive option.

It is against the law. The European F-gas regulation prohibits adding refrigerant to a system that is known to be leaking. A garage that does it anyway is breaking the rules, and you are paying for gas that ends up in the atmosphere. We are F-gas certified for both R134a and R1234yf, and we work by those rules.

What we do for your air conditioning

From a straightforward service to tracing an invisible leak. Everything under one roof, for every make and model.

Aircon service (regas), from € 120

We evacuate the system, pull a vacuum, check that it holds pressure and refill to the manufacturer’s specification. From € 120 for older cars running R134a, and from € 180 for cars from roughly 2017 onwards running R1234yf, which is a far more expensive refrigerant. The final price depends on your car and the amount of refrigerant it takes, and you hear it before we start.

Leak detection with a nitrogen test

If your system does not hold pressure, we pressurise it with dry nitrogen to find where the refrigerant is escaping, from O-rings and hoses to the condenser or the evaporator. Where needed we add UV dye. A full leak test is not part of the standard service, because not every car needs one. If yours does, you hear what it costs first.

Aircon repair and component replacement

Compressor, condenser, hoses, O-rings, expansion valve, dryer. We repair what can be repaired and replace only what genuinely needs replacing. If your compressor has seized, we flush the system and fit a new dryer, so the metal debris does not destroy the new compressor as well.

Aircon cleaning against musty smells

That damp, gym-bag smell is mould growing on the evaporator behind your dashboard. We clean and disinfect the system and replace the cabin filter, so the smell disappears at the source rather than being masked.

Hybrid and electric cars

An electric car has an electrically driven compressor that requires a special non-conductive oil. Ordinary oil causes a short circuit and ruins it. We are GMTO certified for high-voltage systems, use the prescribed oil and keep separate equipment for it. Leased hybrids and EVs are welcome.

Frequently asked questions

No need to click: every answer is right here for you.

My car aircon is not blowing cold air. What is wrong?

In most cases the system has lost refrigerant, which means there is a leak somewhere. Other common causes are a blocked condenser, a failed compressor, an electrical fault or a clogged cabin filter. We measure the pressure and read the fault codes before we replace anything, because guessing at parts is how bills get expensive. Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your number plate.

How much does a car aircon service cost in Rotterdam?

With us it starts from € 120 for cars running R134a and from € 180 for cars from roughly 2017 onwards running R1234yf, which is three to four times more expensive to buy. That is an all-in price including evacuating the system, pulling a vacuum, checking that it holds pressure and refilling to the manufacturer’s specification. The exact price depends on your car and the amount of refrigerant it takes, and you hear it before we start.

Can you refill my aircon if it has a leak?

No, and no other garage should either. The European F-gas regulation prohibits adding refrigerant to a system that is known to be leaking. It would also be a waste of your money, because the new gas escapes through the same hole. We trace the leak first with a nitrogen test, tell you what repairing it costs, and only then refill the system.

Do you speak English?

Yes. Our team helps internationals from Rotterdam and the surrounding area every week, and everything can be handled in English: the diagnosis, the quote, the invoice and the explanation of what we found. You are welcome to call, email or simply drop by.

Do you service the air conditioning of hybrid and electric cars?

Yes. We are GMTO certified for working on high-voltage systems. An electric or hybrid car uses an electrically driven compressor that needs a specific non-conductive oil, and using ordinary oil causes a short circuit that destroys the compressor. We use the oil the manufacturer prescribes and keep separate equipment for it, so there is no cross-contamination.

How long does an aircon service take, and do I need an appointment?

A standard aircon service usually takes about an hour. If we need to trace a leak or replace a component, it takes longer, and we will tell you in advance how long we need your car. We work mainly by appointment, so call us on +31 10 479 00 00 and we will find a slot, including on Saturday mornings.
