The short answer

According to the ANWB, the Dutch motoring organisation, an air con service with a check and a refill costs about € 150. A new air con compressor can cost up to about € 1,000 and a new evaporator around € 1,500, because the dashboard has to come out. At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam an air con service costs from € 120 (R134a) or from € 180 (R1234yf). For a repair you first get a diagnosis and then a quote.

How much is an air con service (regas)?

According to the ANWB an air con service costs about € 150. With us you pay from € 120 for a car with the refrigerant R134a and from € 180 for a car with R1234yf. The refrigerant is the gas in the air con that takes the heat out of the air.

In a proper air con service the technician first recovers all the refrigerant from the system. This shows how much was still in it. Then he vacuums the system. Vacuuming means a pump removes the air and moisture from the pipes. If the vacuum holds, there is no large leak. Only then does he fill the amount the manufacturer specifies. Finally he measures the temperature at the vents and the pressures in the system, so you know the air con cools properly again. In English this is often called an air con regas or recharge.

Why is R1234yf more expensive? The work is the same. The difference is the purchase price of the refrigerant. R1234yf costs more than R134a. Under the European directive on car air conditioning (Directive 2006/40/EC), new cars registered from 1 January 2017 may no longer use a refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) above 150. R134a is above that limit. That is why most cars from after that date have R1234yf. New models had to meet the rule from 1 January 2011. So the year of manufacture does not tell the whole story. The sticker under the bonnet gives the answer. Read more in our article R134a vs R1234yf: which refrigerant does your car use?

Air con check or air con service? During an air con check the technician only measures. He looks at the pressures, the temperature at the vents and whether the compressor and the radiator fan work. No refrigerant goes in. According to the ANWB a check costs a few tens of euros. If you are not sure whether your air con still cools properly, a check is a good first step. If refrigerant turns out to be missing, we can often do the air con service straight away.

Hybrid and electric cars. In many hybrid and electric cars an electric motor drives the compressor. That compressor needs a special oil that does not conduct electricity. The wrong oil can damage the compressor and weaken the insulation of the high-voltage system. So for these cars we tell you the price in advance when you call with your registration number. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems).

Have you seen an air con service price far below the ANWB figure? Ask whether the system is fully recovered and checked for leaks, and whether the refrigerant and VAT are included in the price.

What do the major air con repairs cost?

The three most expensive parts of a car air con are the compressor, the condenser and the evaporator. With these repairs the labour is often a large part of the price. So it makes a big difference how easy the part is to reach in your car.

Air con compressor replacement: up to about € 1,000 according to the ANWB. The compressor is the pump that moves the refrigerant around. The ANWB calls this an expensive repair, because the whole system also has to be flushed. A new compressor comes with a new drier, new oil and a fresh refrigerant fill. The drier is the filter that removes moisture from the refrigerant. We discuss in advance which parts your car needs, based on the manufacturer’s instructions. You get a quote first. An electric compressor in a hybrid or electric car usually costs more. Have it measured first to make sure the compressor really is the problem. Read more about air con compressor replacement.

Air con condenser replacement: quote after the leak test. The condenser sits at the front of the car, behind the grille. It releases the heat from the refrigerant into the outside air. Because it sits at the front, it can start leaking from stone chips, road salt and corrosion. The ANWB gives no figure for this. The price mainly depends on the part and on whether the front bumper has to come off. In many cars the drier is built into the condenser. After the repair the system is vacuumed and refilled.

Air con evaporator replacement: around € 1,500 according to the ANWB. The evaporator sits behind the dashboard. This is where the air going into the car is cooled. According to the ANWB the dashboard has to come out to replace the evaporator. That takes a lot of labour. So first have a leak test confirm that the leak really is in the evaporator. On an older car the repair can cost more than the car is worth.

Is it still worth it on an older car? If the repair costs a lot compared with the current value of your car, first discuss with the technician what makes sense. Sometimes a diagnosis shows that a smaller part is the cause, such as a pressure switch, a relay or a fuse.

Why do air con repair quotes differ so much?

Two quotes for the same repair can differ by hundreds of euros. There are usually clear reasons for that. These are the six main ones.

  1. The refrigerant. R1234yf costs more to buy than R134a. With a full refill that adds up.
  2. The make and model. Part prices vary a lot from car to car. Access matters too. In one car a part is easy to reach, in another the bumper or the dashboard has to come off first.
  3. The hourly rate. According to ANWB Kampioen (November 2025) the average hourly rate is around € 85 at an independent garage and above € 100 at a franchised dealer, both excluding VAT. For a repair that takes several hours, that adds up.
  4. The type of part. An original part from the car maker usually costs more than a part of the same quality from another manufacturer. Ask which part is in the quote.
  5. The diagnosis. A diagnosis tells you whether the part really is faulty. A quote without a diagnosis sometimes looks cheaper, but it is less certain.
  6. What comes with it. A new compressor comes with a new drier and sometimes a new expansion valve. The expansion valve controls how much refrigerant goes to the evaporator. Many compressor manufacturers make new parts a condition of their warranty. Read the manufacturer’s terms and ask whether this is in the quote.

Are you unsure about a quote you already have? We do a second opinion on your quote for € 145, including up to one hour of investigation. We can go through the Dutch quote with you in English.

Is a cheap air con service a good idea?

Yes, if the system is sealed and only a little refrigerant is missing. A car air con is a closed system, but it slowly loses refrigerant over the years. According to the ANWB the refrigerant needs topping up on average once every 4 to 6 years. So have the air con checked every year. If it cools less well, an air con service is needed. If the air con is empty again within one season, it is leaking. Then a refill only helps for a short time, whatever it costs.

The sums with a leak. If you keep having a leaking air con refilled, you pay each time for refrigerant that escapes again. The oil that lubricates the compressor escapes with it. According to the ANWB an air con that runs dry will certainly break down. If the compressor seizes, a major repair comes on top. Having the leak found and fixed once is often cheaper in the long run.

What do the rules say? The European air con directive says a business may not refill an air con that has lost an abnormal amount of refrigerant until the necessary repair has been done. So we do not refill a system we know is leaking.

If your air con keeps losing its charge, we look for the leak with a nitrogen test. We put the empty system under pressure with nitrogen and check whether the pressure drops. This finds larger leaks in places that are easy to reach. If a leak is hard to find, we also use UV dye and first discuss the next step with you. We tell you in advance what the leak test costs. After that you get a quote for the repair. Read more on our page about air con leak detection with nitrogen.

We only refill if the system passes the leak tightness check. That lowers the chance that you pay for refrigerant that escapes again within a few months. If the system leaks, a leak test is the next step. It is not part of the air con service, because most cars do not need it.

For a repair you get a quote after the diagnosis, showing the parts, the labour, the refrigerant and the VAT. We only carry out repairs once you have agreed. If more work turns out to be needed, we contact you first. We hold an F-gas certificate for car air con systems with R134a and R1234yf. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate for hybrid and electric cars, where the compressor often runs on high voltage.

Which questions should you ask about an air con quote?

With five questions you can quickly see whether two quotes describe the same work. You can ask them at any garage, including ours.

  1. Do you first recover all the refrigerant and see how much was still in it?
  2. Do you check that the system is sealed before you refill it?
  3. Do you refill the amount the manufacturer specifies?
  4. What do you do if the system leaks, and what does the leak test cost?
  5. Does the price include parts, labour, refrigerant and VAT?

For a major repair, also compare which part will be fitted and whether the drier will be replaced. So do not look only at the total at the bottom.

How can you keep air con costs down?

You cannot avoid air con costs completely. These five tips do lower the risk of a major repair.

  • Use the air con all year round. The ANWB advises switching the air con on regularly throughout the year. This keeps the compressor and the seals lubricated.
  • Have the air con checked in time. If it cools less well, do not wait. With too little refrigerant the compressor is lubricated less well.
  • Have a leak repaired. Refilling again and again costs money and fixes nothing.
  • Ask for a quote in advance. Ask what is included: parts, labour, refrigerant and VAT.
  • Have a diagnosis done before a major repair. Sometimes a smaller part turns out to be the cause.
