When is it time for a new cabin filter?
According to the ANWB, you should replace the cabin filter on average every 2 years or every 30,000 km. This varies per car, so also check your manufacturer’s service schedule. Parts manufacturer MAHLE recommends an air con check once a year or every 15,000 km, and includes the cabin filter in that check.
Do not wait for the service schedule if you notice these signs of a clogged filter, as listed by the ANWB:
Do you drive a lot in town, in traffic jams or on dusty roads, or do you suffer from hay fever? Then the filter clogs up sooner and replacing it earlier makes sense. What the filter does and how you can see for yourself whether it is clogged is explained in our article cabin filter replacement: when and why (in Dutch).
Which cabin filter suits you?
For most cars there are three types of cabin filter. We use your registration number to look up which ones are available for your car.
| Type of filter | What it does (according to the ANWB) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard pollen filter | Paper or fibre filter that stops dust and pollen | Drivers who mainly drive outside town and have no complaints |
| Activated carbon filter | Also stops odours and binds certain gases better | Drivers who spend a lot of time in town, in traffic jams or behind lorries |
| Fine dust or anti-allergen filter | Filters extra fine particles | Drivers with sensitive airways or an allergy |

If your car came from the factory with a standard pollen filter, an activated carbon filter can often be fitted instead. It fits in the same filter housing. We tell you the difference in price in advance.
What does the technician check when replacing the filter?
Fitting a new filter is more than taking the old one out and putting the new one in. A filter that sits crooked or is fitted the wrong way round lets unfiltered air past. That is why the technician pays attention to these points:
According to the ANWB, the cabin filter usually sits behind the glovebox. In some cars it is under the bonnet or under the dashboard. That means more work.
On its own or during a service or air con service?
Both are possible. According to the ANWB, the filter is often replaced during a regular service. Combining it with a service is convenient, because you do not have to make a separate trip.
| When | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| On its own, by appointment | You are bothered by a smell, weak airflow or misted windows now, and your next service is still a long way off |
| During a service | The filter is in your car’s service schedule, or it was replaced about 2 years ago |
| During an air con service | The air con cools less or smells musty. Replacing the filter at the same time makes sense |
What happens during a service is explained on our page car service in Rotterdam. For the air con, see car air conditioning service in Rotterdam.
What does cabin filter replacement cost?
According to the ANWB, replacing a cabin filter at a garage usually costs € 40 to € 125 in total. The filter itself costs about € 10 to € 50 according to the ANWB, depending on the type.
The difference mainly comes down to two things. First, the location: a filter behind the glovebox is quick to change, a filter under the dashboard takes more time. Second, the filter: an activated carbon or fine dust filter costs more than a standard pollen filter.
New filter, but the smell or misting remains?
Then the cause is usually somewhere else. A musty smell often comes from bacteria and mould on the evaporator, the cold part of the air con behind the dashboard. A new filter does not remove those. Cleaning the evaporator and the air ducts helps in that case.
