Timing belt replacement cost: price, parts and water pump

Replacing a timing belt is one of the bigger maintenance costs on a car with a belt. Prices vary widely: the amount of work and the parts that are replaced along with the belt differ per engine. Below you can read what the ANWB gives as an indication, what a complete price should include and what we charge for the wet belt of the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech.

The short answer

According to the ANWB, the Dutch motoring organisation, replacing a timing belt costs around € 300 up to € 1,000, depending on make and model (checked November 2026). A complete price covers the belt, the tensioner and idler pulleys, the labour and, if the belt drives it, the water pump. A wet belt, as on the 1.2 PureTech, is more work because the belt sits inside the engine. For the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech we have package prices of € 995, € 1,095 or € 1,250, depending on the model and engine, including the timing kit, gaskets, new oil, oil filter and cleaning of the oil strainer, water pump not included. For other engines we tell you one price in advance, based on your registration number.

How much does timing belt replacement cost according to the ANWB?

The ANWB gives a range of around € 300 up to € 1,000 for replacing the timing belt (checked November 2026). The difference comes mainly from the make and model. This is a market indication, not a price for your car. A small engine with an easy-to-reach dry belt is at the bottom of the range. An engine where a lot has to be removed, or a wet belt inside the engine, is at the top end or above it.

Situation Market indication Source
Timing belt replacement, general € 300 to € 1,000 ANWB, checked November 2026
Wet belt 1.2 PureTech at a Peugeot dealer around € 2,200 Kassa, April 2023, price given by an owner
Wet belt 1.2 PureTech at another garage a thousand euros or more Kassa, April 2023
Water pump, part only a few tens of euros up to around € 100 ANWB, checked November 2026

What should the price of a new timing belt include?

A complete price covers more than the belt alone. If you compare quotes, check whether these parts are included:

  • The timing belt. The toothed belt that keeps the crankshaft and camshaft(s) turning in step.
  • Tensioner and idler pulleys. The ANWB advises replacing the tensioners at the same time, because they usually last about as long as the belt and combined maintenance is cheaper. Parts manufacturer Dayco names worn tensioner and idler pulleys as one of the most common causes of belt failure.
  • The water pump, if the belt drives it. For the same reason, the ANWB then advises replacing the pump as a precaution. A new water pump also means new coolant.
  • With a wet belt: new engine oil, a new oil filter and new gaskets, because the engine has to be opened to reach the belt. On the 1.2 PureTech, cleaning the oil strainer is part of the job.
  • The labour. This is often the largest part of the bill. How many hours it takes depends on the engine.
  • Small parts. Such as bolts that the manufacturer says must be replaced.

If the water pump is not on the quote, ask whether the belt on your engine drives the pump. Why it makes sense to include the pump is explained in replacing the water pump with the timing belt.

Why does the price differ so much between engines?

The biggest difference is in the labour. The belt sits behind a cover on the side of the engine, and on most cars that side is close to the inside of the wheel arch or the body. How much has to be removed to reach it varies a lot:

  • Space in the engine bay. On some cars an engine mount has to come off and the engine has to be supported to reach the belt.
  • Dry or wet belt. A dry belt sits outside the oil circuit. A wet belt sits inside the engine, behind seals, so more has to be dismantled and the oil has to be drained.
  • Number of camshafts and parts. More pulleys and a water pump in the belt circuit mean more parts.
  • Special tools. Many engines are set up with a locking tool kit, so the crankshaft and camshafts are in the right position when the new belt is fitted.
  • Quality of the parts. A complete kit from a parts manufacturer costs more than a loose belt.

If your engine has a chain, the ANWB says replacement is more expensive than a belt, because the chain itself costs more and is often harder to reach. On the other hand, most chains have no set replacement interval. The difference is explained in timing belt or timing chain.

What does the wet timing belt of a 1.0 or 1.2 PureTech cost?

For the wet belt of the 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech in Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel models, we have three package prices, including VAT and labour. We confirm which price applies to your car after checking your registration number and the engine code.

Package Examples Price
Compact Compact models, such as the Peugeot 208 and Citroën C3 € 995
Crossover Crossovers and SUVs, such as the Peugeot 2008 and Citroën C3 Aircross € 1,095
Large or turbo Large models and turbo versions, such as the Peugeot 308 and 3008 and Citroën Berlingo € 1,250

Prices of Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, including VAT. If your compact car or crossover has a turbo engine, the higher price may apply. We tell you in advance.

  • Included: the timing kit, gaskets, new engine oil, a new oil filter, cleaning of the oil strainer and the labour.
  • Not included: the water pump. If it needs replacing, we tell you in advance.
  • Not included: damage that was already there, for example to the oil pump or the turbo. If we find it, we first discuss with you what is needed.
  • Extra work is only done with your approval.

Why the oil strainer is part of the job: with a worn wet belt, pieces of belt can get into the oil and block the oil strainer at the bottom of the engine, which can cause the oil pressure to drop. Kassa described this in April 2023. A red oil warning light while driving is a reason to stop. What to do then is explained in oil warning light on. All the complaints and signs are in PureTech engine problems.

Is your car covered by the Stellantis scheme? According to Stellantis, the extended warranty for older 1.0 and 1.2 PureTech engines covers 100 per cent of the cost of parts and labour, up to 10 years or 180,000 km, depending on the production date and subject to conditions. Diagnosis and repair under the scheme go through an authorised repairer of the brand. According to the ANWB, the maintenance may also have been done at a garage other than the dealer, as long as it followed the manufacturer’s maintenance plan. Read the Stellantis conditions for your car. More in the PureTech compensation scheme from Stellantis.

How much extra is the water pump if it has to be replaced too?

Less than a separate repair later. According to the ANWB, the water pump itself costs a few tens of euros up to around € 100. If the belt drives the pump, the pump is already exposed once the belt is off. Most of the work has then been done. If the old pump fails later, the ANWB says the belt has to be replaced again as well and you pay for the labour twice.

If the water pump on your engine is driven separately, by the auxiliary belt or electrically, it does not need to be replaced with the timing belt. We look up how it works on your engine and only include the pump in the quote if it is needed.

What does it cost if the timing belt breaks?

Often far more than replacing it on time. According to the ANWB, if the belt breaks, the engine stops turning at once and the risk of engine damage is considerable. On an engine where the valves and pistons can touch, an interference engine, the pistons hit the open valves. Parts manufacturer Dayco writes that this can seriously damage the engine. On a free-running engine the engine stays intact, but the car will not drive any more.

According to Dayco, a belt breaks most often when the engine is started or switched off, when the tension on the belt is highest. The ANWB notes that a belt sometimes fails while, according to the service book, it should have lasted for years. A worn tensioner or a leaking water pump is then often the cause. That is why we replace the belt together with the tensioners and, if the belt drives it, the water pump.

How we tell you one price in advance for your timing belt

We look up the interval for your engine from your registration number (kenteken) and replace the belt with the tensioners and, if needed, the water pump. We tell you one price in advance. This is how it works:

  1. You call us with your registration number and the mileage.
  2. We look up the engine code, whether your engine has a dry belt, a wet belt or a chain, and which interval the manufacturer prescribes.
  3. We check which parts belong in the kit and whether the belt drives the water pump.
  4. We tell you one price in advance for parts and labour. We only carry out repairs with your approval.

You can read more about how we work, including on vans up to 3,500 kg such as the Fiat Ducato, on our page about timing belt replacement in Rotterdam. For other major repairs, see our guides to brake replacement cost and clutch replacement cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is the water pump included in the PureTech package price?

No. The water pump is not included in the package price of € 995, € 1,095 or € 1,250. If it needs replacing, we tell you in advance. The price does include the timing kit, gaskets, new oil, the oil filter, cleaning of the oil strainer and the labour.

Can I have only the belt replaced, without the tensioners?

No, not at our garage. It is technically possible, but the ANWB advises replacing the tensioners as well, because they last about as long as the belt. According to Dayco, a worn tensioner or idler pulley is one of the most common causes of belt failure. That is why we replace the belt together with the tensioners.

How much does the timing belt of a Fiat Ducato cost?

That depends on the engine and the year of manufacture. We do not give an amount on this page, but we tell you the price in advance based on your registration number. How we replace the belt on the Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper is explained in timing belt for the Fiat Ducato, Boxer and Jumper.

Is replacing a timing chain more expensive than a belt?

Yes. According to the ANWB, replacing a chain costs more, because the chain itself is more expensive and often harder to reach. On the other hand, most chains have no replacement interval. A chain is usually only replaced once it has stretched.

Can I have the timing belt replaced at an independent garage?

Yes. You can also go to an independent garage. For the PureTech scheme, the ANWB writes that maintenance may also have been done at a garage other than the dealer, as long as it followed the manufacturer’s maintenance plan. Keep the invoice with the service book. For a repair under a manufacturer’s scheme or warranty, the manufacturer’s conditions apply: read those conditions for your car.

How do I know if my timing belt needs replacing?

From the interval, not from a noise. A belt usually gives no warning before it breaks. Check the service schedule for the number of kilometres or years after which the belt has to be replaced, whichever comes first. We look it up for you from your registration number.

Is the timing belt checked during the APK (MOT)?

No. The timing belt is not an inspection item in the APK, the Dutch roadworthiness test. Even after your car passes the APK, the belt can be due for replacement. So keep track of the manufacturer’s interval.
