Fiat 500 automatic (Dualogic): maintenance and common problems
Is your Fiat 500 automatic jerking, slipping or changing gear harshly? On most Fiat 500 automatics, the cause is different from that in a conventional automatic. In this article you can read how the Dualogic works, which complaints are common, which maintenance it needs and what you can do yourself.

The short answer
Most Fiat 500 automatics have a Dualogic gearbox. This is a manual gearbox in which a computer and hydraulics take over the clutch and the gear changes. Jerking, slipping or harsh gear changes are therefore often caused by a worn clutch, the hydraulic unit, a sensor or a clutch that needs to be relearned, and not by contaminated automatic transmission fluid. A flush does not help on a Dualogic. A diagnosis with the fault codes read shows where the problem is.
Which automatic does your Fiat 500 have?
The petrol Fiat 500 automatics you see on the road usually have a Dualogic. According to viaBOVAG, the consumer site of the Dutch motor trade association, the Dualogic is an automated manual: a manual gearbox that a robot operates automatically. You mainly find this type in small cars. It is relatively inexpensive, but according to viaBOVAG it is not known for its refinement. A noticeable break in pulling power during a gear change is therefore normal for this type of gearbox.
| Version | Gearbox | Is a flush worthwhile? |
|---|---|---|
| Fiat 500 petrol automatic | Dualogic, an automated manual | No, a diagnosis and maintenance as Fiat prescribes |
| New Fiat 500 Hybrid | Six-speed manual gearbox, according to Fiat | Not applicable |
| Fiat 500e (electric) | No Dualogic | Not applicable |
| Fiat 500X and 500L | Different models, partly with different gearboxes | Look it up by registration number |

How does the Dualogic work?
The Dualogic is a standard manual gearbox with a clutch, but without a clutch pedal. According to the ANWB, the Dutch motoring organisation, in an automated manual a computer and hydraulics take over operating the clutch. On the Dualogic they also do the gear changes.
The Dualogic has an automatic mode and a manual mode. In manual mode you choose the gear yourself with the gear lever, while the computer still operates the clutch. There is no clutch pedal.
Because the control unit takes over the clutch, it has to know the point at which the clutch bites. After the clutch or parts of the hydraulic unit have been replaced, the system has to learn this again. This is done with diagnostic equipment.
Which complaints do you see on a Fiat 500 Dualogic?
The complaints on a Dualogic resemble those of an automatic, but the causes are different. The table shows which complaints occur and what we look at first.
| What you notice | Possible cause | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Jerking or shuddering when pulling away | A worn clutch or a clutch that has not been learned correctly | The fault memory, the learned values and the condition of the clutch |
| The revs rise, the car hardly speeds up, a burning smell | A slipping clutch plate | A test drive and the wear of the clutch |
| A gear will not engage or the car jumps into neutral | Too little hydraulic pressure, a pump or accumulator that is not working properly, or a sensor | Pressure, fluid level, leaks and sensor values |
| A gearbox fault message on the display | The control unit has stored a fault | Reading the fault codes and live data |
| Complaints after a flat battery or a battery change | Voltage too low or lost learned values | The battery, the charging voltage and relearning if needed |
Overview by Autobedrijf Willemsbrug. The diagnosis determines the cause on your car.
According to viaBOVAG, an automated manual should not slip while accelerating in a gear. If it does, that can point to a worn clutch plate. A worn clutch plate has to be replaced. You can read more on our page clutch replacement in Rotterdam.

What maintenance does a Fiat 500 automatic need?
A Fiat 500 with a Dualogic needs the maintenance that Fiat prescribes in the service schedule, not a flush. So check the service book or the owner’s manual of your car. It tells you how often the car needs to go to the garage and what happens then. Good maintenance keeps your car working well and helps to find problems in good time.
During a service for your Fiat we check these points on a Dualogic:
- Leaks: we check that the hydraulic unit, the lines and the gearbox are dry.
- Fluid levels: we check the level of the hydraulic fluid and the gearbox oil as Fiat prescribes.
- Fault memory: we read the control unit. Stored faults sometimes give an early warning, before you notice anything.
- Battery: the Dualogic works electrically and hydraulically. A weak battery can cause gear-change faults. We test the battery and the charging voltage.
- Test drive: we pay attention to pulling away, the gear changes and any clutch slip.
Do you have another car with a conventional automatic with a torque converter? Then a flush can be worthwhile. You can read how it works on our page automatic gearbox flush.
How to make the clutch of your Dualogic last longer
You can influence how long the clutch lasts. On a Dualogic the clutch wears in the same way as on a manual gearbox. The only difference is that there is no pedal. These habits help:
- Hold the car on a hill with the brake. If you hold it with the accelerator, you let the clutch slip. That creates heat and wear.
- Use the brake when stationary. In a traffic jam or at traffic lights, keep your foot on the brake instead of repeatedly giving a little throttle.
- Pull away gently. When you pull away calmly, the clutch closes more smoothly and creates less heat than at full throttle from a standstill.
- Use manual mode on a steep hill or with a full car. The gearbox then holds a lower gear and changes gear less often.
- Keep the battery in good condition. If the car is slow to start or the battery often goes flat, have the battery tested. That matters for the Dualogic too.
- Report complaints in good time. A clutch that has started to slip cannot be saved, but reporting it early prevents extra damage from driving on too long.
What does a repair to a Fiat 500 automatic cost?
That depends on the cause. Relearning after a battery problem is something quite different from a new clutch or a repair to the hydraulic unit. That is why we start with a diagnosis. You receive a quote in advance and we only carry out repairs once you have agreed.
For comparison: according to the ANWB, a gearbox overhaul costs around € 2,500, including fitting. On a Dualogic, the problem is not necessarily in the gearbox itself. It can also be in the clutch, a sensor or the hydraulic unit.
Have you been advised elsewhere to replace the whole gearbox and are you unsure? Then you can have a second opinion with us for € 145, including up to one hour of investigation. You can read more about how we deal with faults on our page car diagnostics.
Is your Fiat also due for its APK (MOT), the annual Dutch roadworthiness test? With us, the APK for your Fiat costs € 50 for a petrol car. You can find us at Boterdiep 11 in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, close to Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip).
