Air con condenser replacement for almost all makes

Air con condenser replacement in Rotterdam

Is your air con no longer cooling and is the condenser leaking? We first use a leak test to find out where the leak is. Then we replace the condenser and refill the system.

The short answer

The air con condenser sits at the front of the car, behind the grille. That is where it cools the hot refrigerant. Stone chips, road salt and corrosion can make it leak. The refrigerant then escapes and the air con stops cooling. A regas then only helps for a short time.

Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde replaces air con condensers on almost all makes. We first use a leak test to confirm that the leak is in the condenser. Then we replace the condenser, vacuum the system and fill it with R134a or R1234yf.

After the leak test you get a quote with the parts, the labour, the refrigerant and the VAT. We only start once you agree. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number.

These signs tell you the air con condenser is leaking

A leaking or dirty condenser usually gives one or more of these signs.

  • The air con cools less and less, or not at all
  • The air con is empty again soon after a regas
  • You see a greasy, oily patch on the condenser, behind the grille
  • The condenser fins are damaged by stone chips or affected by corrosion
  • The air con cools poorly in traffic jams or when stationary, but better on the motorway
  • Some cars show a warning or fault code about the pressure in the air con system

Do you recognise one of these signs? Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. You will hear what the first step is. Has your air con been regassed before? Tell us when you call. Then we start with the leak test and not with a regas.

Is it the condenser? A leak test first

The condenser is one of the places where car air con leaks most often. It sits right at the front and catches stone chips, dirt and road salt. Still, the cause is sometimes something else. Four causes give almost the same symptom.

Cause What you notice Solution
Leak in the condenser The refrigerant escapes. The air con cools less and less. Replace the condenser and refill the system.
Dirty or flattened fins Too little air flows through the condenser. The air con cools poorly, mainly when stationary. Clean the fins. If the condenser is too badly damaged, we replace it.
Faulty cooling fan When stationary, too little air gets through the condenser. While driving, the air con cools better. Repair the fan or its control.
Leak somewhere else You notice the same thing. The leak is at an O-ring, a hose, the compressor or the evaporator. Find the leak and repair that part.

That is why we first measure the pressures and look for the leak with a nitrogen test. Sometimes we also use UV dye. You hear in advance what the leak test costs. That way you do not pay for a condenser that is not leaking.

If the leak is in the condenser, you get a quote for replacing it. We only start once you agree. We do not regas a system that we know is leaking.

How we replace your air con condenser

To fit a new condenser, the air con system has to be opened. So there is more to it than swapping the part. We do this in five steps.

We work by appointment. You bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am or on Saturday at 9.00 am. For a quick question or check, you can walk in without an appointment.

1. Leak test and quote

We measure the pressures, recover the refrigerant and look for the leak with a nitrogen test. If the leak is in the condenser, you get a quote with the parts, the labour, the refrigerant and the VAT. We only start once you agree.

2. Recovering the refrigerant

We collect the recovered refrigerant with our air con service station. That way it does not escape into the air. We are F-gas certified.

3. Replacing the condenser, with new O-rings

On many cars the front bumper has to come off first. We replace the condenser and fit new O-rings at the connections. O-rings are meant for single use. An old ring does not seal as well. On many cars the drier is built into the condenser. It is then usually new as well. If the drier is separate, we include a new drier in your quote.

4. Vacuuming and filling

We vacuum the system. This removes moisture and air. Then we fill it with the amount of R134a or R1234yf and the oil that the manufacturer specifies.

5. Testing for leaks and cooling

Finally we check the system for leaks and test the cooling and the pressures. You hear what we did and what we measured.

How much does air con condenser replacement cost?

We do not have a fixed price for it. The price differs from car to car. After the leak test you get a quote with the parts, the labour, the refrigerant and the VAT. These points decide the price:

  • The make and model. The price of a condenser varies a lot from car to car.
  • Access. On many cars the front bumper and sometimes the headlights have to come off.
  • The drier. It is often built into the condenser. If it is separate, a new drier is included in your quote.
  • The refrigerant. The system is refilled. R1234yf costs more than R134a.

For comparison: across the market, replacing an air con condenser usually costs € 250 to € 600. That is an average and not a quote from us. Read more in our article on what an air con repair costs (in Dutch). You get a warranty on our repairs. With the quote you hear which warranty you get.

Was the condenser damaged in a collision or by stone chips? Then your car insurance sometimes covers the damage. That depends on your cover and your excess. Check with your insurer.

Air con condenser or radiator: what is the difference?

The condenser is often confused with the radiator. Both sit at the front and look alike. Still, they are two parts, each with its own job. The condenser is the radiator of your air con.

Feature Air con condenser Radiator
Part of The air con The engine cooling
Cools The air con refrigerant The engine coolant
Location Usually right at the front, behind the grille Usually directly behind the condenser
When faulty The air con stops cooling. The engine is usually not affected. The engine gets too hot or loses coolant.

Is your engine getting too hot or is the car losing coolant? Then it is the radiator. Read about radiator replacement. You can read more about air con maintenance on our air con service page.

Frequently asked questions about the air con condenser

No need to click. All the answers are already open below.

How much does it cost to replace an air con condenser?

We do not have a fixed price for it. The price depends on the make and model, how easy the condenser is to reach and the refrigerant. After the leak test you get a quote with the parts, the labour, the refrigerant and the VAT. We only start once you agree.

For comparison: across the market, replacing an air con condenser usually costs € 250 to € 600. That is an average and not a quote from us. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number.

Do I pay separately for the leak test?

Yes. The leak test is a separate job. You hear what it costs in advance, when you make the appointment. The leak test tells you whether the leak is in the condenser or somewhere else. That way you do not pay for a condenser that is not leaking. Read more about finding a leak in the air con.

Can a leaking air con condenser be repaired?

No. A condenser is made of thin aluminium with very fine channels. A leak in it usually cannot be sealed for good. We advise against leak sealant, because it can build up in the expansion valve and the drier. So we replace a leaking condenser.

Does a new drier come with it?

Yes. On many cars the drier is built into the condenser. It is then usually new as well. If the drier is separate, we include a new drier in your quote. The drying agent inside absorbs moisture as soon as the system is open. After that, the drier protects the system less well. That is why makers of air con parts specify a new drier once the system has been opened. The drier is also called a filter drier or receiver drier.

How long does air con condenser replacement take?

The replacement itself usually takes a few hours. Then we vacuum the system, fill it and test the cooling. Expect to leave the car with us for half a day to a full day. That depends on how easy the condenser is to reach. You bring the car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am or on Saturday at 9.00 am. If we need to order the condenser, we schedule the repair once it arrives. With the quote you hear how long we need for your car. You can use a free loan bike while one is available.

Can I keep driving with a leaking air con condenser?

Yes. With a petrol or diesel car you usually can. The condenser is part of the air con and not of the engine cooling. Do switch the air con off. With too little refrigerant, the compressor is lubricated less well.

Do you drive an electric car or a plug-in hybrid? On many of these cars the air con system also cools the battery. In that case, have a leak checked soon. Read more about the air con in an electric car.

Is the air con condenser the same as the radiator?

No. The condenser is part of the air con and cools the refrigerant. The radiator is part of the engine cooling and cools the engine coolant. Both sit at the front, which is why people often mix them up. Is your engine getting too hot? Then it is the radiator and not the condenser.

Does the condenser need replacing after a seized compressor?

Yes. That is often needed. When a compressor seizes, metal particles are released. They stay behind in the fine channels of the condenser. Modern condensers cannot be flushed clean in every case. Then we advise a new condenser, so that the new compressor does not get damaged. Read more about air con compressor replacement.
