What service does your classic car need?

For a classic car, we follow the schedule in the original service book or workshop manual. Many classics cover only a few kilometres a year. In that case the age of the oil, the brake fluid and the tyres matters more than the mileage. That is why we usually advise a service once a year, even if you drive very little.

During the service we look at the oil, the ignition, the carburettor, the brakes and rust. The right oil depends on the engine. We choose that oil together with you.

Minor or major service for your classic car?

Which service your car needs depends on the model, the engine, the age and the mileage. A minor and a major service usually include the following:

Part Minor service Major service
Engine oil and oil filter Change and replace Change and replace
Fluids Check and top up if needed Check, and change the brake fluid
Brakes (including drum brakes) Check for wear Thorough check, and adjust if needed
Ignition Check Check or replace the spark plugs, and the contact breaker points on older cars
Lubrication points Grease where needed Grease all lubrication points
Suspension and rust Check Thorough check, including the underbody
Belts and hoses Check Check for cracks and leaks
APK Book separately Free if your car needs an APK and you combine the inspection with the major service

What do we check when servicing your classic car?

At every service we follow the original schedule for your car. On a classic car, we also pay extra attention to these points:

  • Oil that suits the engine: an engine without an oil filter needs a different oil from an engine with one. Engines with flat tappets (the parts that operate the valves) benefit from oil with enough zinc (ZDDP). We choose the oil together with you.
  • E10 and fuel lines: according to the ANWB, not all older cars can run on E10, which is petrol with up to 10 percent ethanol. Over time, ethanol can damage fuel lines and gaskets. If in doubt, the ANWB advises E5. We check the fuel lines at every service.
  • Brake fluid: standard brake fluid absorbs water, even when the car is not being used. This can make the brake lines rust from the inside. We tell you when the brake fluid is due for replacement.
  • After a long time off the road: if your classic has been standing still for a long time, we check the tyres for cracks, the tyre pressures, the brakes and any leaks.
  • Rust: rust on load-bearing parts, such as the floor, the sills, the chassis and the suspension mountings, is common on older cars. We show you what we find.
