The short answer

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, an APK for your BYD costs € 50, whether it is electric or a plug-in hybrid (DM-i). The price includes VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW.

If you combine the APK with a major service, the APK is free. You bring your BYD in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. If a repair is needed, we tell you the cost first.

What do we check during the APK for your BYD?

The APK is the same legal inspection for every make: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seat belts, emissions and the vehicle identification (VIN and number plate). On a BYD, there are a few points we look at with extra care, or that you as the owner can keep an eye on:

  • DM-i is a plug-in hybrid: on a BYD, DM-i means the car has a petrol engine and a battery that you charge from a plug. During the APK, the petrol engine gets an emissions test. The APK costs € 50.
  • Brakes: these cars mainly use the electric motor to brake, so the brake discs get little use and can rust. During the APK we test how well the brakes work. During a service we clean and check the brakes.
  • Tyres: an electric BYD is heavy. Because of this, the tyres wear faster. Check the tread yourself regularly.
  • First APK: an electric or petrol car needs its first APK when it is four years old. After that at six and eight years old, and then every year.

Servicing your BYD with us

We service your BYD according to the manufacturer’s schedule. On a DM-i, this includes an oil change, as on a petrol car. On an electric BYD, the focus is on the brakes, brake fluid, tyres, cabin filter and battery cooling.

  • Following the BYD schedule: we use your registration number to look up which service your car needs, and we use parts and fluids that suit your car.
  • Manufacturer’s warranty: having your car serviced by an independent garage does not automatically end your manufacturer’s warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts. We record the service in our system and you get an invoice listing all the work. Keep it in a safe place.
  • Free APK with a major service: if you have the APK done at the same time as a major service, you pay nothing for the inspection.
  • Price in advance: call +31 10 479 00 00 and give us your registration number. We will tell you straight away what the service costs.

BYD and the APK

During the APK we inspect the brakes, tyres, suspension, steering, lights, seat belts and the vehicle identification (VIN and number plate). The APK does not test the condition of the battery. An electric BYD does not get an emissions test. On a DM-i, the petrol engine does get an emissions test.

Our mechanics hold a GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems). This means they can work safely on hybrid and electric cars. Read more about servicing hybrid and electric cars (in Dutch).

What does DM-i mean on a BYD?

On a BYD, DM-i stands for a plug-in hybrid: a car with a petrol engine and a battery that you charge from a plug. During the APK, the petrol engine gets an emissions test. The APK costs € 50.

My BYD is only two years old. Does it need an APK yet?

No. An electric or petrol car needs its first APK when it is four years old. You can already bring it to us for servicing.

Do I need to go to a BYD dealer for servicing?

No. You can also come to us for servicing. Having your car serviced by an independent garage does not automatically end the manufacturer’s warranty, as long as the work follows the BYD schedule and uses suitable parts. Keep the invoice for every service.

How much does an APK for my BYD cost?

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, an APK for a BYD costs € 50, whether it is electric or a plug-in hybrid (DM-i). With a major service, the APK is free. All prices include VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW.

Do I need to wait during the APK for my BYD?

No. You bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. The inspection itself usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. On Saturdays we are open for servicing and repairs, but not for the APK.

What happens if my BYD fails the APK?

We call you first. We tell you what the problem is, what the repair costs and whether there are any extra inspection costs. Once you approve, we repair the fault, inspect the car again and register the APK result with the RDW. If your BYD failed the APK somewhere else, we carry out a new APK after the repair at our normal rate.

Where are you based and where do your customers come from?

Our workshop is at Boterdiep 11 in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, close to Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip). Our customers come from all over Rotterdam, including Centrum, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Hillegersberg-Schiebroek, Delfshaven and IJsselmonde, and from Barendrecht, Ridderkerk, Schiedam, Capelle aan den IJssel and Delft. You can park for free in front of the garage if there is space.
