The short answer

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, an APK for your Smart costs € 50, whether it runs on petrol or is electric. The price includes VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW.

If you combine the APK with a major service, the APK is free. You bring your Smart in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. If a repair is needed, we tell you the cost first.

We are an independent garage for all makes and an RDW-approved APK station. Our qualified inspectors check your Smart against the legal APK requirements. You know in advance what the inspection costs.

A Smart is made for the city and often does short journeys. On a petrol Smart, this means moisture gets into the oil more quickly and the exhaust rusts sooner. We know the Fortwo well, including the rear-mounted engine, which is hard to reach.

What do we check during the APK for your Smart?

The APK is the same legal inspection for every make: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seat belts, emissions and the vehicle identification (VIN and number plate). On a Smart, there are a few points we look at with extra care, or that you as the owner can keep an eye on:

  • Short journeys: according to Carwiki, these cause moisture and petrol to get into the oil. That is why it is wise to change the oil in a Smart every year, even if you do not drive many kilometres.
  • Exhaust: on the Fortwo from 2007 up to and including 2015, condensation can rust through the exhaust. A leaking exhaust means the car fails the APK.
  • Older Fortwo: on the first Fortwo, from 1998 up to and including 2007, we pay extra attention to rust on the sills, the brake pipes and the suspension.
  • Electric: the electric Fortwo and Forfour (EQ) and the new #1, #3 and #5 do not get an emissions test. These cars mainly use the electric motor to brake, so the brake discs get little use and can rust.

Servicing your Smart with us

We service your Smart according to the manufacturer’s schedule, with oil and parts that suit your car. If you mainly do short journeys, we advise you to have the oil changed every year.

  • Following the Smart schedule: we use your registration number to look up which service your car needs, and we use parts and fluids that suit your car.
  • Manufacturer’s warranty: having your car serviced by an independent garage does not automatically end your manufacturer’s warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts. We record the service in our system and you get an invoice listing all the work. Keep it in a safe place.
  • Free APK with a major service: if you have the APK done at the same time as a major service, you pay nothing for the inspection.
  • Price in advance: call +31 10 479 00 00 and give us your registration number. We will tell you straight away what the service costs.

Electric Smart

The electric Fortwo and Forfour (EQ) and the new #1, #3 and #5 can all come to us for the APK and servicing. An electric Smart does not get an emissions test. The APK does not test the condition of the battery.

Our mechanics hold a GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems). This means they can work safely on hybrid and electric cars. Read more about servicing hybrid and electric cars (in Dutch).

Why is it wise to change the oil in my Smart every year?

A Smart often does short journeys. The engine does not warm up properly, so moisture and petrol get into the oil. Changing the oil every year protects the engine, even if you do not drive many kilometres.

What do you check during the APK for a Fortwo?

We pay extra attention to the exhaust, rust on the sills, the brake pipes, the tyres and the lights. If a repair is needed, we tell you the cost first.

Do you also inspect the electric Smart #1?

Yes. The APK for an electric Smart costs € 50. There is no emissions test. We do pay extra attention to the tyres, brakes and suspension.

How much does an APK for my Smart cost?

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, an APK for a Smart costs € 50, whether it runs on petrol or is electric. With a major service, the APK is free. All prices include VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW.

Do I need to wait during the APK for my Smart?

No. You bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. The inspection itself usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. On Saturdays we are open for servicing and repairs, but not for the APK.

What happens if my Smart fails the APK?

We call you first. We tell you what the problem is, what the repair costs and whether there are any extra inspection costs. Once you approve, we repair the fault, inspect the car again and register the APK result with the RDW. If your Smart failed the APK somewhere else, we carry out a new APK after the repair at our normal rate.

Where are you based and where do your customers come from?

Our workshop is at Boterdiep 11 in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, close to Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip). Our customers come from all over Rotterdam, including Centrum, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Hillegersberg-Schiebroek, Delfshaven and IJsselmonde, and from Barendrecht, Ridderkerk, Schiedam, Capelle aan den IJssel and Delft. You can park for free in front of the garage if there is space.
