The short answer

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, your Smart gets a minor or major service according to the manufacturer’s service schedule. If your Smart is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, the warranty stays valid as long as the servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule, even if you do not go to the dealer.

The price depends on the model, the engine and the mileage. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number and mileage, and we will tell you in advance what the service costs. You can also visit our workshop.

If you combine a major service with the APK (MOT), the inspection is free. You drop off your Smart Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am. If extra work is needed, we call you first.

Why have your Smart serviced at Autobedrijf Willemsbrug?

We are an independent garage for all makes and an RDW-approved APK station. We service your Smart to the manufacturer’s specifications, with parts and oil that suit your car.

A Smart is made for the city and often does short trips. That calls for extra attention to the oil and the exhaust. We know the Fortwo well, including its rear-mounted engine, which is hard to reach.

What servicing does the manufacturer specify for your Smart?

Smart sets a service schedule for each model. A service is usually due after a year or after a set number of kilometres, whichever comes first. Many Smarts cover only a few kilometres. In that case, time is the main factor that decides when the service is due.

On short trips the engine does not warm up properly. According to Carwiki, moisture and petrol then get into the oil. That is why we advise changing the oil in a petrol Smart every year, even if you do not drive much. The petrol engines in the Fortwo and Forfour from 2014 onwards have a timing chain.

We use your registration number to look up which service your Smart needs and, where possible, we read the service indicator. After the service, we reset the service reminder, if our equipment can do this.

Minor or major service for your Smart?

Which service your car needs depends on the model, the engine, the age and the mileage. A minor and a major service usually include the following:

Part Minor service Major service
Engine oil and oil filter Change and replace Change and replace
Fluids Check and top up if needed Check, change the brake fluid if the schedule requires it
Brakes and tyres Check for wear Thorough check, including brake discs and brake pads
Filters Check Replace the air filter and cabin filter according to the schedule
Spark plugs (petrol) Not standard Replace at the manufacturer’s interval
Battery Check Test with a battery tester
Timing belt (if the engine has one) Not standard Check whether the belt is due for replacement at the set interval
APK Book separately Free if you combine it with a major service

What do we check when servicing your Smart?

At every service we follow the manufacturer’s schedule. For your Smart, we also pay extra attention to these points:

  • Oil and short trips: a Smart often covers short distances. Moisture and petrol then get into the oil. So we advise an oil change every year, even at low mileage.
  • Exhaust: short trips leave condensation in the exhaust. Over time, this can make the exhaust rust through. During the service we check for rust and leaks. A leaking exhaust is also a reason for a car to fail the APK.
  • Coolant on the 0.9 turbo: on the Fortwo and Forfour with the 0.9 turbo, the thermostat housing gasket can start to leak. The engine then loses coolant. We check the level and look for signs of leaks.
  • Twinamic automatic: the Fortwo and Forfour from 2014 onwards can have a twinamic automatic. This is an automatic gearbox with two clutches. If the car shudders at low speed or the gear changes are jerky, mention it when you bring it in for its service.
  • Electric: the electric Fortwo and Forfour (EQ) and the new #1, #3 and #5 have no engine oil. Because these cars mainly use the electric motor to brake, the brake discs get little use and can rust.

Servicing your electric Smart

The electric Fortwo and Forfour (EQ) and the new #1, #3 and #5 have no engine oil, spark plugs or timing chain. They still need servicing: brakes, brake fluid, tyres, suspension and cabin filter, according to the Smart schedule. On the #1, #3 and #5, that includes the battery cooling.

Our mechanics hold a GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems). This means they are trained to work safely on the high-voltage systems of hybrid and electric cars. Read more about servicing hybrid and electric cars (in Dutch).

How much does a service for your Smart cost?

The price of a service differs from car to car. The model, the engine, the specified oil and the mileage determine what needs to be done and which parts are needed. That is why we do not give an amount on this page.

  • Price in advance: call +31 10 479 00 00 and give your registration number and mileage. We tell you straight away what the service costs, including VAT.
  • You can also drop in: visit our workshop at Boterdiep 11. We look at your Smart and tell you on the spot what the service costs.
  • Extra work: if we find something during the service that was not part of the agreement, we call you first. We only do extra work with your approval.
  • Free APK: if you have the APK for your Smart done at the same time as a major service, you pay nothing for the inspection.

Does the manufacturer’s warranty on your Smart stay valid?

Yes. Having your car serviced at an independent garage does not void your manufacturer’s warranty, as long as the servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts and oil. This follows from the European rules for the motor industry. Extra warranties or mobility services from the brand may be linked to servicing at a dealer. We record the service in our system and, if you have a service book, in that too. You receive an invoice listing all the work. Keep it in a safe place.

More about servicing your Smart

Frequently asked questions about servicing your Smart

No need to click: all the answers below are already open for you.

Why do you advise changing the oil in my Smart every year?

A Smart often does short trips. The engine then does not warm up properly, and moisture and petrol get into the oil. Changing the oil every year protects the engine, even if you do not drive much.

Does my Smart have a timing belt?

No. The petrol engines in the Fortwo and Forfour from 2014 onwards have a timing chain. It does not need replacing at a fixed interval. For an older Smart, we look it up using your registration number. If you hear a rattling noise on a cold start, mention it when you bring the car in for its service.

Do you also service the electric Smart #1?

Yes. An electric Smart has no engine oil, but it still needs servicing. We check the brakes, brake fluid, tyres, suspension and cabin filter according to the manufacturer’s schedule.

How much does a service for my Smart cost?

It depends on the model, the engine and the mileage. Call +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number and mileage, and we will tell you in advance what the service costs, including VAT. You can also visit our workshop. If you combine a major service with the APK, the inspection is free.

Will my manufacturer’s warranty be void if you service my Smart?

No. Having your car serviced at an independent garage does not void your manufacturer’s warranty, as long as the servicing follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses suitable parts and oil. Extra warranties or mobility services from the brand may be linked to servicing at a dealer. You receive an invoice listing all the work.

Can I wait while you do the service?

No. You drop off your Smart Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am. A minor service is often ready within a few hours. We call you when the car is ready.

Where is your workshop, and can I come to you from outside Rotterdam?
