A second opinion on your car repair

Shocked by a quote from the dealer or a garage chain? We assess the proposal ourselves and explain clearly whether the repair looks necessary. Sometimes it can be done for less, and sometimes a different cause turns out to be more likely.

The short answer

Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde is an independent garage that gives a second opinion on a repair proposal from another garage. We make our own diagnosis with our own testing and diagnostic equipment and explain whether the proposed repair makes sense. A second opinion costs € 145, including up to one hour of diagnosis. We only carry out further diagnosis or a repair once you agree, and you hear the cost in advance.

The € 145 is not deducted from any repair. So you pay for the diagnosis and the advice, not for any repair that may follow from it.

If we replace parts, you can look at the old parts afterwards. We do not repair anything without your explicit approval.

Call us first on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number and the quote. In many cases we can tell over the phone whether an appointment is worthwhile. That short first conversation costs you nothing.

When is a second opinion a good idea?

We see these situations regularly. Do you recognise one? Then a second assessment may be worth it.

  • You get a quote that shocks you, with no clear explanation of the costs.
  • The garage says a complete part needs replacing, such as a gearbox, wiring harness or air con system.
  • Your car failed the APK (MOT) on points you do not understand.
  • Two garages give different explanations for the same problem.
  • The fault is still there after an expensive repair.
  • You are sent to the dealer because the garage round the corner cannot find the fault.

Not sure whether a second opinion makes sense? Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We think it through with you and tell you straight away whether an appointment looks worthwhile.

What a second look can save you

These are real examples of situations customers described in their reviews after first visiting another garage. They are individual cases. The outcome depends on the vehicle and the problem.

A € 1,100 wiring harness, or two bulbs

The rear lights on an Opel had stopped working. The main dealer could not find the fault and advised replacing the complete wiring harness for € 1,100. According to the quote, another € 1,400 came on top for other problems.

A national chain could not find the problem either and suspected a short circuit. With us, the bulbs turned out to be causing the fault. The customer wrote afterwards that it took one day and that he paid sixty percent less than at the dealer.

A new gearbox, or only the oil

An automatic was no longer shifting properly. Two garages and the ANWB roadside assistance (Wegenwacht) confirmed the owner’s suspicion that the gearbox needed replacing. The amount was so high that he considered getting rid of the car.

We first checked whether the transmission oil could be the cause. After a transmission flush with the specified oil and a new filter the car shifted properly again. According to his review, the customer saved over seventy-five percent. Does your car have a DSG gearbox? Read more about a DSG flush.

Replace the whole air con, or one cable

A customer was told by the dealer that the complete air con system needed replacing. With us, it turned out that only one cable was faulty.

That is an example of why a good diagnosis matters. Other garages and dealers in the region also refer complex air con problems to us at times. Read more about our approach on our page about car air con.

A dealer who cannot find it, and a mechanic who keeps looking

On a Porsche, the main dealer had already carried out several expensive repairs without solving the problem. We removed the engine, found the cause and fixed the problem.

The customer wrote that the bill was low compared with the hours that went into it. Our starting point is that you pay for a well-founded solution, not for replacing parts that did not need replacing.

How a second opinion works with us

We work in four set steps. That way you know where you stand.

1. Call with your registration number and the quote

Tell us briefly what is going on and what the other garage proposed. We can often tell over the phone whether a second assessment makes sense. That call costs you nothing.

2. We make our own diagnosis

We do not take the earlier verdict for granted. Depending on the problem, we may measure pressures, read fault codes with diagnostic equipment (in Dutch) and inspect the part concerned.

We charge up to one hour for the first diagnosis. That hour is included in the price of € 145. If we have not found the answer by then, we call you first. You hear what we suspect, what further diagnosis we advise and what it costs.

We only continue once you agree. That way no extra diagnosis costs arise without your say.

3. You hear what is really going on

We explain it in plain language, with no sales talk. Is the other garage probably right? Then we tell you so. An independent opinion can also be a confirmation.

Could a different approach work, or could it cost less? Then we explain why and tell you what costs to expect.

4. You decide, we show you the parts

We do not repair anything without your explicit approval. If you have the work done with us, we explain afterwards which parts were replaced and why.

If the replaced parts are available, you can also look at them. We have worked this way for over 45 years.

Why we can give this opinion

A second opinion is only valuable if it is carefully backed up and you know clearly what the advice is based on.

  • Family business since 1979. Over 45 years of experience, with an owner who is still involved in the workshop.
  • We assess your situation ourselves. We have no brand quotas or sales targets that decide which repair you should have done.
  • RDW-approved, GMTO-certified and specialised in air con systems. We are RDW-approved to carry out APK inspections. Our mechanics hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars, and are certified under the F-gas Regulation for work on mobile air con systems with R134a and R1234yf.
  • We back up our diagnosis with measurements, fault codes and technical inspection. That way we decide where further diagnosis is needed.
  • Other garages also refer complex faults to us at times. Difficult air con problems are one example.
  • If parts are replaced, we explain why. You hear why a part was replaced and which problem it was linked to.

You can read what customers write about this on our page with customer reviews (in Dutch).

What do people most often ask us for a second opinion on?

Usually it is an expensive repair or a diagnosis that is not clearly explained. These are topics we see often.

  • The automatic gearbox. Before you have it overhauled, we can investigate the problem and assess the transmission oil. A flush only makes sense if it suits the type of transmission and the problem.
  • The air con. This ranges from a leak that we can investigate with a suitable pressure test to a compressor that may not be the cause.
  • A failed APK. Do you not understand the reasons for the fail? We explain them and can also carry out the APK ourselves. We are RDW-approved to carry out APK inspections. Read more about our APK inspection.
  • The timing belt. We assess both the dry timing belt and the wet timing belt (belt-in-oil) used in certain PureTech engines (in Dutch).
  • Electrical faults. A warning light is not a diagnosis. We read fault codes and find the cause with suitable diagnostic equipment (in Dutch). Also read what to do when the engine warning light comes on.
  • Engine damage and oil consumption. Before you have an engine replaced, we first investigate the cause of the damage or the oil consumption, as far as possible.

Is your problem not listed? Call us. We tell you straight away whether we can help. If we cannot, we tell you that too.

Frequently asked questions about a second opinion

Below you will find the answers to the questions we are asked most often about a second opinion.

How much does a second opinion cost?

A second opinion costs € 145, including up to one hour of diagnosis. Where your problem calls for it, this covers reading fault codes, measurements, the inspection and our verbal explanation.

If a repair looks necessary, we tell you which solution we advise and what it costs. If we have not found the answer after that hour, we call you first. You hear what we suspect, what further diagnosis we advise and what it costs. We only continue once you agree.

The first phone call costs you nothing. Sometimes we can already help you over the phone.

Why is your second opinion not free?

We charge a separate amount for the diagnosis. We deliberately do not deduct it from any repair. That way you know in advance what the assessment costs, and the advice is independent of whether you have the repair done with us.

Does it turn out that nothing is wrong, or is the other garage probably right? Then we tell you so. You have then paid for a careful diagnosis and a clear answer.

Do I need to bring the quote from the other garage?

No. You do not have to, but it does help us. With the quote we can see what was proposed and what price was given. That lets us judge more precisely whether the proposed repair fits your problem.

Do you have nothing on paper? Then tell us what you were told. We make our own diagnosis and do not take earlier advice for granted.

Can I have the repair done with you afterwards?

Yes. If you wish, we carry out the repair as well. You hear the cost in advance and we only start once you agree. But you are not tied to anything. You can take our opinion back to the other garage or go to another garage.

We would rather earn your trust than win one job.

What if your opinion matches the other garage’s?

Then we tell you so. An independent opinion is sometimes a confirmation. You then know better where you stand and why we think the repair is needed.

We do not look for a problem in order to carry out a repair, and we do not keep quiet about a necessary repair to tell you what you want to hear.

Can I also get a second opinion on a failed APK?

Yes. Do you not understand the reasons for the fail, or do you doubt whether they are justified? We explain each point in plain language and show you what it relates to.

If you like, we can also inspect your car again ourselves. We are RDW-approved for APK inspections and work to the current APK rules. Read more about a failed APK.

Will I get to see the old parts?

Yes. If we replace parts, you can look at them afterwards, as far as they are available. We explain why the parts were replaced and how they were linked to your problem.

We have worked this way for over 45 years.

How soon can I come in?

We can often help you the same week. If it is urgent, we see what is possible. We are open Monday to Friday from 8.00 to 17.30 and on Saturday from 9.00 to 15.00.

Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then look at which appointment suits you best. You drop off your car Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am, or on Saturday at 9.00 am.
