For DSG and S tronic

DSG flush for your Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT or Skoda

Does your DSG jerk when you pull away? Does it shudder when you accelerate, or shift unevenly? We find the cause first. On a wet-clutch DSG, we change the oil and the filter, using oil that meets the manufacturer’s standard. A dry-clutch DSG needs a different approach. We tell you the price before we start. The short answer

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam, a DSG flush means changing the oil and filter of a wet-clutch DSG, such as the DQ250 and DQ381. We do not connect a DSG to the flushing machine. The manufacturer specifies this oil change at around 60,000 kilometres.

The dry-clutch DQ200 has no oil around its clutches. On this gearbox, a flush or oil change will not cure jerking or shuddering. If you have symptoms, we inspect the clutches and the mechatronic unit.

Do you recognise these DSG symptoms?

A dual-clutch automatic shifts quickly, but it is sensitive to old oil and wear. These are the symptoms we see most often. Not sure what is causing them? Our article on spotting automatic gearbox problems (in Dutch) explains what each sign can mean.

Jerking when pulling away

The car moves off with a jolt or a hesitation, especially when you pull away slowly or park. On a wet-clutch DSG, old oil around the clutches can cause this.

Judder when pulling away

You feel a shudder while the clutch engages. On a wet-clutch DSG, fresh oil can help. On the dry-clutch DQ200, the cause is often the clutch itself.

Uneven shifting at low speed

The gearbox hesitates or shifts roughly, especially between first and second gear. You notice it first in city traffic.

Flashing gear indicator

Is the D, S or R flashing on the dashboard? Then the DSG control unit has stored a fault. Have the fault memory read soon, so we can see what is going on.

Burning smell after a traffic jam or mountain drive

Do you smell something burning after a traffic jam or a drive in the mountains? Then a clutch may be slipping too much. Have the gearbox checked soon, before more damage occurs.

Slow or harsh kickdown

At full throttle, the gearbox waits too long or shifts down with a bang. Dirty oil can cause this, because it makes the valves for the two clutches respond more slowly.

Which DSG does your car have?

Since 2003, Volkswagen has built several DSG versions, with a dry or a wet clutch. The type determines what maintenance your gearbox needs.

Type Clutch Model years Common in
DQ200 (7-speed) Dry From 2008 Polo, Golf, A1, A3, Ibiza, Fabia and Octavia with smaller engines
DQ250 (6-speed) Wet 2003 to around 2020 Golf GTI, Passat, Touran, A3 and Superb with more powerful engines
DQ381 (7-speed) Wet From around 2017 Newer Golf, Tiguan, Passat, Leon, Octavia and Kodiaq
DQ500 (7-speed) Wet From around 2009 Transporter, Tiguan and high-powered models

Audi calls the same technology S tronic. We also maintain the longitudinal versions (DL382 and DL501) in models such as the A4, A5 and Q5.

Dry-clutch or wet-clutch DSG: the difference determines the approach

In a wet-clutch DSG, the clutches run in oil. This oil cools and lubricates, and the control system also uses it to change gear. The oil ages and gets dirty from clutch wear. That is why the manufacturer specifies an oil and filter change at around 60,000 kilometres.

We give a conventional automatic gearbox a flush, also called a power flush. We do not connect a DSG to the flushing machine. We drain the oil, replace the filter and fill the gearbox at the specified temperature. If the oil is very dirty, we discuss with you whether a second oil change makes sense.

In the dry-clutch DQ200, the clutches do not run in oil. An oil change will not cure a clutch problem there. The mechatronic unit does have its own oil. If you have symptoms, we check the mechatronic unit and the clutches and discuss with you what is needed.

You can read more about routine maintenance on our page about the DSG oil change. You can read how we flush a conventional automatic on our page about automatic gearbox flushing.

For the whole Volkswagen Group

The DSG is fitted in many cars from the Volkswagen Group. Do you drive a Volkswagen or Audi? Then also take a look at our page about automatic gearbox flushing for Volkswagen and Audi. Below is a selection of the models we regularly see in our workshop.

Volkswagen

We maintain the DSG of the Polo, Golf (including GTI and GTE), Passat, Touran, Tiguan, Caddy and Transporter. That ranges from the dry-clutch DQ200 in the Polo and Golf to the DQ500 in the commercial vehicles. Our technicians are GMTO certified (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) to work on hybrid and electric cars.

Audi

Audi calls its dual-clutch automatic S tronic. We maintain the A1, A3, Q2 and Q3 with a transverse gearbox, and the A4, A5, A6 and Q5 with the longitudinal DL382 or DL501.

SEAT and Skoda

The SEAT Ibiza, Leon, Arona and Ateca and the Skoda Fabia, Octavia, Superb and Kodiaq use the same DSG technology. We use your number plate to look up which gearbox and which oil your car needs.

Frequently asked questions about flushing a DSG

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

When does a DSG need a flush or an oil change?

For wet-clutch DSGs, the manufacturer specifies an oil and filter change: at around 60,000 kilometres for the DQ250 and at around 120,000 kilometres for the DQ381. Has this maintenance been skipped, or do you have shifting problems? Then have the gearbox checked.

For the dry-clutch DQ200, the manufacturer does not specify a fixed oil change. If you have symptoms, we check the mechatronic unit and the clutches.

What is the difference between a dry-clutch and a wet-clutch DSG?

In a wet-clutch DSG, the two clutches run in oil, which cools and lubricates them. In a dry-clutch DSG, such as the DQ200, the clutches work dry. Only the gears and the mechatronic unit have oil. That is why fresh oil can help with a clutch problem in a wet-clutch DSG, but not in a dry-clutch one.

Not sure which type you have? We can look it up for you using your number plate.

My DSG shudders when I accelerate. Will a flush help?

Yes. On a wet-clutch DSG, fresh oil can reduce or cure the shudder. Where needed, we then carry out a clutch adaptation (relearn). On the dry-clutch DQ200, a flush does not help, because the clutches there do not run in oil. The cause is then often the clutches themselves or the mechatronic unit. New oil will not fix that.

We find the cause first. After that, we tell you what makes sense.

How much does a DSG flush cost?

That depends on the type. A wet-clutch DSG has more oil and a filter. On the dry-clutch DQ200, the price depends on what the inspection shows. You can find national guide prices on our page about the cost of an automatic gearbox flush.

Call us with your number plate on +31 10 479 00 00. We then give you a quote for your car, including oil, filter, labour and VAT.

Is a DSG flush the same as a DSG oil change?

Yes. In practice, they are the same. We do not connect a DSG to the flushing machine. What people often call a DSG flush is a DSG oil change. We drain the oil, replace the filter and fill the gearbox with oil that meets the manufacturer’s standard.

Is the oil very dirty, or has the maintenance been skipped for a long time? Then we discuss with you whether a second oil change makes sense.

Do you also service Audi’s S tronic?

Yes. S tronic is Audi’s name for the same dual-clutch technology. The transverse versions are technically the same as the DSG. We also service the longitudinal DL382 and DL501, in models such as the A4, A5 and Q5, according to the manufacturer’s instructions and with the specified oil.
