Specialists in the EAT6, EAT8 and AT6

Automatic gearbox flush for your Opel, Peugeot or Citroën

Does your EAT8 jerk at low speed, does the EAT6 hesitate or is the old AL4 starting to falter? The newer models from these makes share their automatic gearboxes (automatic transmissions). We find the cause first. Then we flush the gearbox with the fluid the manufacturer specifies. We tell you what the job costs before we start. Our team speaks English.

The short answer

Peugeot and Citroën have used Aisin automatic gearboxes for years: the six-speed AT6 and EAT6 and the eight-speed EAT8. Since Opel joined the same group, the newer Opels have these gearboxes too. Older Peugeots and Citroëns have the four-speed AL4, the same gearbox that Renault calls the DP0.

The fluid in Opel, Peugeot and Citroën automatic gearboxes ages too. As a precaution, we recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres. On the older AL4 we recommend flushing sooner. If you have shifting problems, we look for the cause first.

Flushing an Opel, Peugeot or Citroën automatic gearbox usually takes us two to three hours, including a test drive and reading the fault memory.

Which automatic gearbox does your Opel, Peugeot or Citroën have?

Since Opel became part of the same group as Peugeot and Citroën, the three makes share their technology. These are the four gearbox types you will come across most often.

Gearbox type Gears Model years Common in
AL4 (Renault: DP0) 4 1999 to around 2013 Older Peugeot 206, 207 and 307 and Citroën C3 and C4
AT6 and AF40 (six-speed) 6 2004 to around 2018 Peugeot 308 and 508, Citroën C5, Opel Astra and Insignia
EAT6 6 2014 to around 2020 Peugeot 208 and 2008, Citroën C4 Cactus and Grand C4 Picasso
EAT8 8 From 2017 Peugeot 3008 and 508, Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Corsa, Mokka and Grandland

Do you drive a DS? It shares this technology, so we can help with that too. Older Opels often have an automatic gearbox made by GM itself, or an Easytronic. Call us and we will find out which gearbox your car has.

The EAT8: a strong eight-speed gearbox with a sensitive side

At heart, the EAT8 shifts smoothly and economically. Still, many drivers know its weaker points: small jerks at low speed, a hard downshift when braking or a hesitation when pulling away. These problems are often linked to the condition of the fluid, the adaptation values and the gearbox software version.

That is why we start by reading the fault memory and taking a test drive. If the fluid is the cause, we flush the gearbox with the fluid it needs. After that, the gearbox can relearn its shifting behaviour. If a software update is needed, or the cause lies deeper, we tell you clearly before any work is done. You can read how the treatment works on our page about the automatic gearbox flush.

The AL4: a familiar gearbox with its own quirks

If you drive an older Peugeot or Citroën automatic, there is a good chance it has an AL4. This four-speed automatic gearbox is sensitive to heat and to fluid that ages quickly. This can make the pressure control valves stick. The approach that works for Renault works here too: flush in time with the specified fluid and replace the valves where needed. You can read all about this gearbox on our page about the Renault automatic gearbox flush.

From Corsa to C5 Aircross, from 208 to Grandland

A selection of models from these three makes that we regularly see in our workshop. For each model we check which automatic gearbox is fitted.

Corsa, Mokka and Grandland

The new Opel generation uses the EAT8. The older Mokka X, Astra and Insignia have a six-speed automatic gearbox made by GM itself, or the Aisin AF40.

208, 2008 and 3008

The smaller Peugeot models use the EAT6 or EAT8, and the 3008 and 508 usually the EAT8. A lot of city driving puts extra strain on the automatic gearbox. Talk to us about the maintenance that suits the way you drive.

Citroën and the hybrids

We regularly see the C4, C5 Aircross and Berlingo. The latest 48-volt hybrids have a dual-clutch gearbox with a built-in electric motor, which needs its own approach. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate, the Dutch qualification for working on hybrid and electric cars.

Frequently asked questions about Opel, Peugeot and Citroën automatic gearboxes

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

My EAT8 jerks at low speed. Is that a known problem?

Yes. This is a common complaint about the EAT8, so you are not alone. The cause is often a mix of old fluid, disturbed adaptation values and an older software version.

We start by reading the fault memory and taking a test drive. If the fluid is the cause, we flush the gearbox with the right fluid. After that, the gearbox can relearn its shifting behaviour. This often reduces the jerks. If a software update is needed, we tell you before we start.

What is the difference between the AT6, EAT6 and EAT8?

They are three generations from the same maker, Aisin. The AT6 is the older six-speed gearbox, the EAT6 its more economical successor and the EAT8 the eight-speed gearbox in many newer models. Each needs its own fluid and its own procedure. We use the number plate and gearbox code to look up which generation your car has.

How much does a gearbox flush cost for an Opel, Peugeot or Citroën?

Flushing the compact AL4 is the cheapest. The EAT8 needs more fluid, so the price is higher. The cost for your car depends on the gearbox type and the specified fluid.

See the guide prices for each gearbox type on our page about the cost of an automatic gearbox flush. Or call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your number plate. We will give you a quote for your car, including fluid, labour and VAT.

My older Peugeot or Citroën has the AL4. Does the same apply?

Yes. Broadly, the same applies. The AL4 does need more preventive care, because its fluid ages quickly and the pressure control valves react to that. A timely flush can help prevent the familiar jerking and limp mode.

It is the same gearbox that Renault fits as the DP0. See also our page about the Renault automatic gearbox flush.

Is the EAT8 in my Opel the same as the one in a Peugeot?

Yes. Since the makes became one group, they use the same EAT8, designed by Aisin. Only the software and the tuning differ by make and model. For the flush that makes little difference: the same fluid, the same procedure and the same clear advice in advance.

My Corsa or Mokka is a hybrid. Can the gearbox be flushed?

No. A standard flush is not suitable for this gearbox. The 48-volt hybrids do not have an EAT8 but a dual-clutch gearbox with a built-in electric motor. That gearbox needs its own maintenance approach. Our technicians are GMTO certified for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Call us with your number plate and we will tell you what is possible and useful for your version.
