The short answer

Renault has used several automatic gearboxes: the classic DP0 (known as the AL4 at Peugeot and Citroën), the six-speed AJ0 from Jatco and the EDC dual-clutch gearbox. We check which gearbox is fitted to each car.

As a precaution, we recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres for a Renault automatic gearbox. For the DP0 we recommend one every 60,000 to 80,000 kilometres, because this gearbox is more sensitive to old fluid. With the DP0, it is best not to wait for problems. We do not machine-flush an EDC. On the wet-clutch EDC we change the oil instead. If you have shifting problems, we look for the cause first.

Flushing a DP0 or AJ0 usually takes two to three hours, including a test drive and reading the fault memory.

Do you recognise these problems in your Renault?

A Renault automatic gearbox often shows early signs of trouble, especially the DP0. If you know the signs, you can have it checked in time. The same symptom can have different causes. Our article on recognising automatic gearbox problems (in Dutch) explains each sign in more detail.

A jolt when pulling away in town

You feel a clear jolt, mainly between first and second gear. On the DP0 this can be an early sign of old fluid or sticking pressure control valves.

A thud when you select D or R

As soon as you move the lever to D or R, the gearbox engages with a noticeable thud. Old fluid or worn pressure control valves can make the pressure build up too suddenly.

“Check gearbox” warning

The display asks you to have the gearbox checked, or the car stays stuck in third gear. This is the well-known limp mode of the DP0. Have the fault memory read before you drive much further.

EDC hesitates when pulling away

The car waits before it moves off, or it pulls away with a small jerk. On the wet-clutch EDC, old fluid can play a part. On the dry-clutch EDC, the cause is more often the clutches or the mechatronic unit.

Engine revs rise but the car does not speed up

The engine revs, but the car barely moves forward. This means the clutches or clutch plates are no longer gripping properly. Dirty fluid can cause this, but so can wear. Do not keep driving the car like this.

Rougher shifting in traffic jams

When you crawl along in a traffic jam or drive on a hot summer day, the gearbox shifts noticeably more roughly. The DP0 is sensitive to heat, and old fluid then gives less protection.

Which automatic gearbox does your Renault have?

Over the years Renault has fitted several automatic gearboxes, each with its own character and fluid. Look up your type or give us a call. We can find it for you using the number plate and gearbox code.

Gearbox type Gears Model years Common in
DP0 and DP2 (AL4) 4 1999 to around 2016 Clio, Mégane, Scénic and Kangoo

The notorious DP0: a bad name, but often worth saving

The DP0, known as the AL4 at Peugeot and Citroën, owes its reputation to two weak points. The gearbox runs hot and the fluid ages faster than average. Old fluid can make the pressure control valves stick. Then the familiar problems follow: jerking, hard thuds and finally limp mode. If maintenance has been skipped, these problems can start before 100,000 kilometres.

The good news is that if you act in time, this gearbox can often still be saved. A flush with the specified fluid, with new pressure control valves where needed, can bring the shifting back to normal. You can read how the treatment works on our page about the automatic gearbox flush.

Renault-automaat wordt gespoeld met professionele apparatuur

From Clio to Espace, from DP0 to E-Tech

A selection of the Renault models whose drivers come to us. For each model we check which automatic gearbox is fitted.

Clio

From the Clio II with the DP0 to the Clio V with the EDC, each generation has its own gearbox and fluid. These cars do a lot of city driving, and that puts strain on the automatic gearbox. Talk to us about the maintenance that suits the way you drive.

Captur and Arkana

The Captur and Arkana use a dry-clutch or wet-clutch EDC. The E-Tech hybrid versions have their own gearbox without a clutch. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate, the Dutch qualification for working on hybrid and electric cars.

Mégane, Scénic and Kangoo

We see the older generations with the DP0 most often, and the newer ones with the EDC more and more. We also look after Kangoos used as a work van or camper.

Your automatic gearbox specialist for Renault

Stay one step ahead of the well-known problems

With a Renault in particular, it pays to act in time. A timely flush with the right fluid can help limit the well-known DP0 problems. We use your number plate to look up which gearbox your car has and which fluid it needs. Then we give you a quote for the agreed work. We tell you in advance what is included, such as fluid, labour and VAT. We only carry out extra repairs after discussing them with you.

Frequently asked questions about flushing a Renault automatic gearbox

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

My Renault jerks or goes into limp mode. Can the gearbox still be saved?

Yes. It often can, if you act in time. On the DP0, limp mode and jerking are often caused by old fluid and sticking pressure control valves. Both can usually be fixed.

We first read the fault memory and take the car for a test drive. This lets us check for mechanical damage. Then we tell you clearly, before any work starts, whether a flush, new pressure control valves or a combination of both is the solution.

Is the DP0 automatic gearbox really as bad as people say?

Yes. The reputation did not come out of nowhere. The gearbox is sensitive to heat and the fluid ages faster than average. Even so, a DP0 that gets fresh fluid in time can last a long time. The problem is that many of them had no gearbox maintenance at all.

A preventive flush, with new pressure control valves where needed, can prevent many problems.

How much does it cost to flush a Renault automatic gearbox?

That depends on the gearbox type. The compact DP0 needs the least fluid, so it is the cheapest. An AJ0 needs more fluid. You can find national guide prices for each gearbox type on our cost page.

Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your number plate. We will give you a quote for your car, including fluid, labour and VAT.

Does replacing the pressure control valves help, or should I have the gearbox flushed?

Often both, and the order matters. Flush first, then assess. Dirty fluid is often the reason the valves start to stick, so fresh fluid can already solve part of the problem.

If the shifting problems continue after that, we replace the pressure control valves as well. This helps you avoid paying for parts you did not need.

My Clio or Captur has an EDC. Can it be flushed?

No. We do not machine-flush an EDC. What we can do depends on the version. The seven-speed wet-clutch EDC has an oil bath, and on that gearbox we change the oil. The six-speed dry-clutch EDC has no oil bath around the clutches. Problems there usually come from the clutches or the mechatronic unit.

We read the fault memory and assess what is going on. If a repair is needed, we arrange it for you and discuss the approach and the cost with you first. We use the number plate and gearbox code to look up which EDC your car has.

Do you also flush the gearbox of my E-Tech hybrid?

No. A standard flush is not suitable for the E-Tech. The E-Tech hybrids have their own gearbox without a traditional clutch, and that gearbox needs its own approach. Our technicians are GMTO certified for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Call us and we will discuss what your E-Tech needs.
