The short answer

Volkswagen and Audi share a lot of technology. With transverse engines, the DSG and the S tronic are the same gearbox under a different name. Audi also supplied the continuously variable Multitronic, and the large models have a conventional Tiptronic automatic gearbox (automatic transmission).

Each gearbox has its own fluid and approach. For the wet-clutch DSG and the Multitronic, the manufacturer itself specifies an oil change, often at around 60,000 kilometres. On those gearboxes we change the fluid, and on the wet-clutch DSG we change the filter as well. We flush a Tiptronic. The dry-clutch DSG cannot be flushed. If you have shifting problems, we look for the cause first.

How long the job takes depends on the type of gearbox. Allow two to three hours for a Tiptronic flush. An oil change on a DSG or Multitronic is usually quicker.

Do you recognise these problems in your Volkswagen or Audi?

Whether it is a DSG, S tronic or Multitronic, aged fluid can cause shifting problems. The same problems can also have another cause, such as wear, the mechatronic unit or the software. Our article on recognising automatic gearbox problems (in Dutch) explains what can be behind each problem.

Jerking at low speed

In slow, stop-start traffic, the gearbox shifts clumsily with small jerks. On the dry-clutch DSG, this often points to the clutches or the mechatronic unit. On the wet-clutch DSG, aged fluid can play a part.

Juddering when pulling away

This is a known Multitronic problem. The car shudders or lurches as it moves off. Fresh fluid of the right specification can improve this. Sometimes the cause is worn clutch plates or a problem with the control unit.

Hard or clunking gear changes

Shifting up or down comes with a noticeable knock or thud. Aged fluid can upset the pressure build-up in the mechatronic unit. The mechatronic unit itself or the software can also be the cause.

Revs rise but you do not speed up

The engine speed rises or hovers while your road speed stays the same. In a continuously variable gearbox, this can point to slip in the chain or the clutch plates. Have it checked in good time.

Gearbox fault warning

The screen shows a transmission fault, or the gearbox drops into limp-home mode. Have the fault memory read before you drive much further.

Slow response to kick-down or paddles

You ask for a downshift, but the gearbox only responds after a clear pause. That can be a sign of pressure loss caused by old fluid, but also of a problem with the mechatronic unit or the software.

Which automatic gearbox does your Volkswagen or Audi have?

Volkswagen and Audi use several automatic gearboxes, each with its own fluid and approach. These are the main families.

Gearbox type Gears Model years Common in
Wet-clutch DSG (DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500) 6 or 7 From 2003 Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touran and A3
Dry-clutch DSG (DQ200) 7 From 2008 Polo, Golf and A1
S tronic (DL382 and DL501) 7 From 2008 A4, A5, A6, A7 and Q5
Multitronic (01J, 0AN and 0AW) continuously variable 1999 to 2014 A4, A5, A6 and A8 with front-wheel drive
Tiptronic (ZF and Aisin) 5 to 8 From 1996 Touareg, Q7, A8 and older Passat

Do you drive a SEAT or Skoda? They use the same DSG technology. You are welcome to bring those to us as well.

The Multitronic: continuously variable, but not carefree

The Multitronic (01J and later 0AW) is Audi’s continuously variable gearbox with chain drive. Audi fitted it in the A4, A5, A6 and A8 without quattro all-wheel drive. The gearbox is comfortable, but sensitive to the condition of the fluid. As the fluid ages, the well-known lurching when pulling away or hovering revs can start. Audi itself recommends an oil change at around 60,000 kilometres for this gearbox. We change the fluid using the specified CVT fluid.

If the chain or the clutch pack is already worn, we tell you clearly before we start. New fluid will not fix that. You can read how we flush a gearbox step by step on our page about flushing an automatic gearbox. For everything about the dual-clutch gearbox, see our page about flushing a DSG.

From Polo to Q7, from GTI to GTE

A selection of the Volkswagen Group models we regularly have on the lift. We check which gearbox is fitted in each model.

Volkswagen

We regularly see the Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, Touran and Transporter in our workshop. From the dry seven-speed DSG in the Polo to the wet six-speed DSG in the older Golf GTI, we know the differences between each version.

Audi

From A1 to Q7, we maintain the automatic gearbox: the S tronic in the A4, A5 and Q5, the Multitronic in the older A4 and A6, and the Tiptronic in the large models. We also work on quattro versions.

GTE, e-tron and other hybrids

In the Golf GTE, Passat GTE and A3 e-tron, the electric motor works together with a wet six-speed DSG. The fluid in this DSG ages too, and an oil change at around 60,000 kilometres applies here as well. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Frequently asked questions about Volkswagen and Audi automatic gearboxes

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

What is the difference between DSG and S tronic?

Technically, they belong to the same family: a dual-clutch gearbox developed within the Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen, SEAT and Skoda call it DSG, and Audi calls it S tronic. Audi also uses its own versions for longitudinal engines, such as the DL382 and DL501. For maintenance, the name makes no difference. The gearbox type and the fluid determine the approach.

My Multitronic jerks or lurches when I pull away. Can that be fixed?

Yes. In some cases it can. The lurching can happen because the fluid in this continuously variable gearbox loses its properties. The clutch plates and the chain then no longer work together smoothly. If that is the cause, an oil change with the right fluid can reduce the problem.

If the wear has already gone too far, we tell you clearly after our test drive and diagnosis.

Which fluid do you use for DSG, S tronic and Multitronic?

A different one for each gearbox. The dry-clutch DSG has gear oil and a separate fluid in the mechatronic unit. The wet-clutch DSG and the S tronic need special DSG fluid. The Multitronic has its own CVT fluid that does not belong in any other gearbox.

We look up the right specification using your registration number and the gearbox code, and we set the fluid level at the specified temperature.

How much does a gearbox flush cost for a Volkswagen or Audi?

It varies a lot by gearbox. An S tronic or Tiptronic needs more fluid than a wet-clutch DSG, so it costs more. You can find an overview on our page about automatic gearbox flush costs.

Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then give you a quote for your version, including fluid, labour and VAT.

My Golf or Polo has the dry-clutch DSG. What can you do for it?

A flush is not an option on the dry seven-speed DSG. The clutches run dry and the gearbox only holds a small amount of gear oil. Problems here usually come from the mechatronic unit or the clutches themselves.

We read the gearbox’s fault memory and assess what is going on. If the mechatronic unit or the clutches need repair, we arrange it for you and discuss the approach and the cost with you first. On our DSG flush page, you can read what does and does not make sense for each DSG type.

Do you also maintain the Tiptronic in my Touareg or Q7?

Yes. Behind the Tiptronic name is a conventional automatic gearbox with a torque converter, supplied by ZF or Aisin. It is well suited to a flush, including the fluid in the torque converter and the cooler.

As a precaution, we recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres. That certainly applies to heavy models such as the Touareg and the Q7, and if you tow a trailer or caravan.
