The short answer

Autobedrijf Willemsbrug in Rotterdam maintains Mercedes-Benz automatic gearboxes: the 5G-Tronic (722.6), 7G-Tronic (722.9), 7G-DCT and 9G-Tronic (725.0). For each vehicle, we check which transmission is fitted and which maintenance or flush procedure suits it. Our team speaks English.

Mercedes-Benz prescribes a long fluid change interval for many automatic gearboxes. For older gearboxes, the brand sometimes prescribes no fluid change at all. As a precaution, we advise flushing the automatic gearbox every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres. With heavy use or towing a trailer, we advise flushing sooner. If there are shifting problems, we first find out the cause.

The job usually takes two to three hours. The precise time depends on the type of transmission, how easy it is to reach the filter and any extra checks. We use fluid that is proven to meet the prescribed MB specification for your transmission.

Do you recognise these typical problems with your Mercedes-Benz?

Mercedes-Benz transmissions can last a long time with correct maintenance. However, the transmission fluid ages because of heat, load and use. Over time, this can lead to shifting problems. The same problems can also have other causes, such as wear, electronics, fluid pressure or a problem with the engine management.

Jerking when the engine is cold

In the first few kilometres after starting, the automatic gearbox changes gear harshly or with a noticeable jolt. Once the fluid is warm, the problem sometimes eases. This can point to old or dirty fluid, but also to other causes. That is why we first check the transmission data, the fluid level, the fluid condition and the adaptation values.

Hard thump in D or R

When you select drive or reverse, you feel a clear thump. A problem like this can be linked to the fluid condition, fluid pressure, adaptation values, the valve body or wear. A fault memory read and a targeted check are needed to find the cause.

Delayed kick-down

You press the accelerator to overtake, but the automatic gearbox hesitates or shifts down late. This can make overtaking harder. So have the cause checked in good time and adjust your driving until the problem has been looked at.

Limp mode or warning message

The transmission goes into limp mode or the dashboard shows a fault. This can have different causes, such as a sensor, electronics, fluid pressure, a leak, wear or the fluid condition. A fault memory read is needed before we advise any treatment.

Fluctuating engine revs

At a steady speed, the rev counter moves up and down unsteadily. This can point to slip or rough engagement of the lock-up clutch (the clutch inside the torque converter), but also to other engine or transmission problems. A test drive and a diagnosis show which next step is needed.

Judder when pulling away

Between 40 and 80 kilometres per hour, you feel a slight vibration or shudder. A vibration like this can come from the fluid condition, the clutches, the torque converter, driveline parts or the engine management. The 7G-DCT is diagnosed differently from an automatic gearbox with a torque converter.

Which automatic gearbox does your Mercedes-Benz have?

Mercedes-Benz uses different transmissions, depending on the model, engine, drive and year of production. Below are the transmissions we work on regularly. We check the correct transmission and fluid specification for each vehicle.

Gearbox type Factory code Model years Common in
5G-Tronic 722.6 From 1996 Older C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, ML, SLK and Sprinter
7G-Tronic and 7G-Tronic Plus 722.9 From 2003 (Plus from 2010) Various C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, ML, Viano and Vito models
7G-DCT 724.0 From 2011 A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA with a transverse engine
9G-Tronic 725.0 From 2013 Various newer C-Class, E-Class, GLC, GLE and V-Class models

This is how we find out which gearbox is fitted and which fluid specification goes with it. Each transmission needs a specific fluid. The MB specification required can vary by transmission variant, production period and vehicle. That is why we only use fluid that is proven to meet the prescribed standard for your transmission.

Flush or repair? We diagnose first

If the problems are caused by old or dirty fluid, a professional flush can improve the quality of the gear changes. If the transmission has mechanical damage, a flush is not enough. That is why we first take a test drive and read the transmission fault memory.

We only advise a flush if it makes technical sense for your Mercedes-Benz. With wear, leaks, electronic faults or internal damage, we discuss a different solution. You can read how a flush works step by step on our page about the automatic gearbox flush.

We work on Mercedes-Benz vehicles of different generations, from recent lease cars to modern classics. The transmission, engine variant and service history determine which work is suitable. Below you can see a selection of models that are regularly up on our lifts.

Cars

We work on the A-Class and B-Class with 7G-DCT, the C-Class, the E-Class and the S-Class, among others. Models such as the CLA 180 CDI, GLA 200 and SLK also come in regularly. On older models, such as the 450 SL and the 190 series, we first check which transmission is fitted.

SUV, 4MATIC and AMG

Examples include the ML-Class, GLK 350 4MATIC, GLC 250 d 4MATIC, GLB 250, GLE 500 e and G-Class. We can also assess AMG models, such as the A 45, CLA 45 and GLC 43. For each model and driveline, we check the transmission variant and the prescribed fluid.

Vans and campers

We work on the transmissions of the Vito, Viano, V-Class and Sprinter, among others, including Sprinters converted into campers. Heavily loaded vehicles, lots of city driving and towing a trailer can put extra strain on the driveline. So talk to us about which service interval suits the way you use your vehicle.

Our workshop has five heavy-duty lifts, including lifts for campers and commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg. When you book, please give us the dimensions and weight of your camper. We work on campers and commercial vehicles by appointment.

Frequently asked questions about flushing a Mercedes-Benz automatic gearbox

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

My Mercedes-Benz jerks mainly when the engine is cold. Will a flush help?

Yes. A flush can help if the fluid condition is the cause. Jerking after a cold start can also be linked to software, sensors, fluid pressure, wear or the engine management.

During the test drive and diagnosis, we check whether a flush makes sense for your car. If the problem is caused by the fluid condition, a flush can improve the quality of the gear changes. A flush is not the right solution for every transmission fault.

Which fluid do you use for my Mercedes-Benz?

The MB specification required depends on the precise transmission variant and the vehicle. Specifications such as MB 236.14, 236.15 and 236.17 are used in different applications, but we choose the correct fluid based on the vehicle and transmission data.

The wrong fluid can cause problems in an automatic transmission. That is why we check the prescribed specification before we order or fill any fluid.

How much does a Mercedes-Benz automatic gearbox flush cost?

That depends on your gearbox type and the agreed work. A 9G-Tronic can need a different amount of fluid, a different filter and a different procedure from a 5G-Tronic. How easy it is to reach the filter and any extra checks can also make a difference.

You can find national guide prices on our page about the cost of an automatic gearbox flush. Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then give you a quote for your car, including the parts and work agreed in advance.

The dealer says my 9G-Tronic does not need a flush. Is that true?

No. That does not automatically apply to every 9G-Tronic. Maintenance advice can vary by model, transmission variant and use. Modern transmission fluid also ages because of heat, load and use. However, that does not mean every 9G-Tronic must be flushed at the same interval.

We look at your vehicle data, service history and problems. Then we advise whether a fluid change, a flush, a diagnosis or another repair is suitable. There is no fixed mileage at which every car develops problems.

Do you also flush the automatic gearbox of my Vito, V-Class or camper?

Yes. We work on the transmissions of the Vito, Viano, V-Class and Sprinter, including Sprinters converted into campers. Heavily loaded vehicles, lots of city driving and towing a trailer can put extra strain on the driveline.

Our workshop has five heavy-duty lifts, including lifts for campers and commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg. When you book, please give us the dimensions and weight of your vehicle. We can then check whether your camper or commercial vehicle fits in our workshop.

What if a flush cannot solve my problem?

Then we tell you so in advance, before we carry out any work. We start with a test drive and read the transmission fault memory. Where needed, we also check the fluid level, the fluid condition and possible leaks.

If there turns out to be internal or mechanical damage, for example to the clutches, bearings or the mechatronic unit, we do not advise a flush as the solution. We then discuss which next step makes technical sense and what it costs.

This way, we do our best to make sure you do not pay for work that is unlikely to address the cause of your problem.
