Specialists in BMW’s ZF automatic gearboxes

Automatic gearbox flush for your BMW

Does your BMW jerk when you pull away, does the Steptronic drop down a gear with a thud, or does the screen show a drivetrain fault? We find the cause first. Then we flush the ZF 6HP or 8HP with fluid that ZF has approved for your gearbox. We tell you what the job costs before we start. Our team speaks English.

The short answer

Most rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive BMWs have an automatic gearbox (automatic transmission) made by ZF: the 6HP in older generations and the 8HP in most models from 2009, including the plug-in hybrids. Compact front-wheel drive models have a different gearbox. We check which gearbox is fitted in each car.

BMW calls the fluid a lifetime fill. ZF itself does recommend an oil change after 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres, or after eight years at the latest. With heavy use, or if the car’s earlier use is unknown, ZF advises changing the fluid sooner. As a precaution, we recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres. If you have shifting problems, we look for the cause first.

The job usually takes two to three hours. The flush itself takes about an hour. The rest of the time goes on the test drive, reading the fault memory, the filter and setting the fluid level.

Do you recognise these typical BMW problems?

BMW’s ZF gearboxes can last a long time if the fluid stays in good condition. As the fluid ages, shifting problems can start. The same problems can also have another cause, such as wear, electronics or engine management. Do you recognise more than one? Our article on recognising automatic gearbox problems (in Dutch) lists all the signs.

Jerking when pulling away

Whether it is an X5 or a 3 Series, you feel a jolt or a bump when you pull away gently or the gearbox shifts up. Dirty fluid can make the valves in the valve body react more slowly. With a test drive and a fault memory read, we check whether that is the cause in your car.

Hard thud when slowing down

As you roll up to traffic lights, the gearbox shifts down to the lowest gears with a noticeable thud. That can point to aged fluid in the 8HP, but also to the gearbox’s adaptation values or software.

Drivetrain fault warning

The screen shows a transmission or drivetrain fault and the gearbox stays in one gear. A warning like this can have several causes, such as a sensor, the electronics, the fluid pressure or the engine. We need to read the fault memory before we recommend any work.

Slipping when you accelerate

The engine revs up, but the car does not speed up to match. That can happen because the fluid loses its friction properties, but also because the clutches inside the gearbox are worn. Do not keep driving like this for too long. Have it checked.

Vibration at around 100 kilometres per hour

A fine vibration at a steady speed, as if you are driving over rumble strips. That can point to the lock-up clutch in the torque converter engaging unevenly. Tyres, wheel balance or the driveline can also be the cause.

Hesitant kick-down

You put your foot down to overtake, but the Steptronic waits before it changes down. That is unpleasant, especially on the motorway, where you need that response most.

Which automatic gearbox does your BMW have?

BMW has bought many of its automatic gearboxes from ZF for decades and sells them under the name Steptronic. Some sporty and compact models have a dual-clutch gearbox or an Aisin automatic. Each type has its own fluid and approach.

Gearbox type Gears Model years Common in
ZF 5HP 5 1991 to around 2005 Older 3, 5 and 7 Series (E36, E46, E39 and E38)
ZF 6HP 6 2001 to around 2013 3 Series (E90, E91), 5 Series (E60), 7 Series (E65), X3 and X5
ZF 8HP 8 From 2009 Most rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models from the F and G generations, including the plug-in hybrids
Dual clutch (DCT) 7 From 2008 Older M3 and M4, and compact models such as the newer 1 and 2 Series
Aisin automatic 6 or 8 From 2014 Front-wheel drive models, such as the 2 Series Active Tourer, the X1 (from F48) and the X2

For the 6HP and 8HP, we use fluid that ZF has approved for that gearbox, such as LifeguardFluid 6 and LifeguardFluid 8, and we set the fluid level at the correct temperature. We can also flush an Aisin automatic. On a dual-clutch gearbox, we change the oil instead of flushing it. We cover every generation of the ZF automatic on our ZF automatic gearbox page.

Lifetime fill? ZF itself takes a different view

BMW fills the automatic gearbox at the factory with fluid that, according to its documentation, lasts a lifetime. ZF, the company that builds that same gearbox, has pointed out for years that transmission fluid ages because of heat and wear particles. That is why ZF itself does recommend an oil change after 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres, or after eight years at the latest. With heavy use, or if the car’s earlier use is unknown, ZF advises changing the fluid sooner. ZF also mentions flushing as an option. On gearboxes that have had no maintenance, we often see the first problems between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometres. That is why we follow ZF’s interval.

In a flush, also called a power flush, we replace a large part of the old fluid, including the fluid in the torque converter and the cooler. You can read how the job works step by step on our page about flushing an automatic gearbox. Not sure what is going on with your BMW? Give us a call. We are happy to advise you.

From 1 Series to X7, from E generation to hybrid

A selection of the BMW models we regularly have on the lift for a flush or fluid service. We check which gearbox is fitted in each model.

Saloon and Touring

We flush the automatic gearbox of the 3 Series (E90, E91, F30 and F31), the 5 Series (E60, F10 and F11, including the M550d) and the 7 Series. We also regularly see the 218i and 220i Active Tourer. These do not have a ZF gearbox, but an Aisin automatic or a dual-clutch gearbox. We maintain those too.

X models

We see the X1, X2, X3 (including the M40i), X4 and X5 in several generations. These heavier models put extra strain on the gearbox, especially when towing a trailer. So talk to us about the service interval that suits the way you use your car.

Plug-in hybrids

In the 330e, 530e and X5 xDrive45e, the electric motor is built into the 8HP, in place of the torque converter. ZF specifies its own fluid for this version. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Frequently asked questions about flushing a BMW automatic gearbox

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

My BMW jerks when pulling away. Will a flush solve it?

Yes. That is the case when aged fluid is the cause. In ZF gearboxes, jerking when pulling away or shifting up is often caused by aged fluid. It makes the valves in the valve body react more slowly. In that case, a flush with fresh fluid can improve the shift quality.

With the test drive and the fault memory read beforehand, we check whether there is another cause. This way we do all we can to make sure you do not pay for work that does not address your problem.

BMW calls the fluid a lifetime fill. So why do you recommend a flush?

Because ZF, the company that builds these gearboxes, takes a different view. ZF points out that transmission fluid ages because of heat and wear particles. It recommends an oil change after 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres, or after eight years at the latest, and sooner with heavy use or if the car’s earlier use is unknown.

On gearboxes that have had no maintenance, we often see the first problems between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometres. That is why we, like ZF, recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres.

Which fluid do you use for my BMW?

For the ZF gearboxes, we use fluid that ZF has approved for your gearbox, such as LifeguardFluid 6 for the 6HP and LifeguardFluid 8 for the 8HP. Each generation has its own fluid, and the types cannot be swapped. For the plug-in hybrids, ZF specifies yet another fluid.

We use your registration number and the gearbox code to look up which fluid your gearbox needs, and we set the fluid level at the correct temperature.

How much does it cost to flush a BMW automatic gearbox?

It depends on the gearbox. An 8HP needs a different fluid and a different filter from an older 6HP. On the 6HP and the 8HP, the filter usually sits in the plastic oil pan (sump), which we then replace as a whole.

You can find national guide prices on our page about automatic gearbox flush costs. Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then give you a quote for your car, including fluid, filter, labour and VAT.

Do you also flush the gearbox of a hybrid BMW?

Yes. We also maintain the automatic gearbox of a hybrid BMW. In plug-in hybrids such as the 330e, 530e and X5 xDrive45e, the electric motor is built into the 8HP, in place of the torque converter. ZF specifies its own fluid for this version.

For each car, we follow ZF’s instructions to decide whether a flush or an oil change is the right choice. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Can every problem be solved with a flush?

No. If the clutch plates or the gearbox’s mechatronic unit are already damaged, fresh fluid will not fix that. That is why we start with a test drive and read the transmission’s fault memory.

We only recommend a flush when it makes technical sense. If it does not, we discuss with you which repair is sensible and what it will cost.
