Specialists in Volvo’s Geartronic and Powershift

Automatic gearbox flush for your Volvo

Does your Volvo shift roughly, does the Powershift shudder as you pull away, or does the screen ask for transmission service? We find the cause first. Then we flush or change the fluid in the Geartronic, the Powershift or the 8-speed automatic, using the fluid Volvo specifies for your gearbox. We tell you what the job costs before we start. Our team speaks English.

The short answer

Volvo does not build most of its automatic gearboxes itself. The Geartronic and the later 8-speed automatic come from Aisin, and the Powershift comes from Getrag. We check which gearbox is fitted in each car.

With normal use, Volvo does not specify an oil change for many of these automatic gearboxes. Even so, the fluid ages. Volvo specialists often recommend a flush every 120,000 to 150,000 kilometres. As a precaution, we recommend doing it sooner: every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres, especially with heavy use or if you tow a caravan. If you have shifting problems, we look for the cause first.

The complete job on a Volvo automatic gearbox usually takes two to three hours. The flush itself takes about an hour. The rest of the time goes on the test drive, reading the fault memory and setting the fluid level.

Do you recognise these problems in your Volvo?

A Volvo automatic gearbox can last a long time if the fluid stays in good condition. As the fluid ages, shifting problems can start. The same problems can also have another cause, such as wear, electronics or engine management. Our article on recognising automatic gearbox problems (in Dutch) explains which signs need attention.

Jerking at low speed

In town traffic or when you pull away from a standstill, you feel a clear jolt. In the five-speed Geartronic, this can point to aged fluid, but also to wear in the valve body. With a test drive and a fault memory read, we check what is going on.

Delayed engagement in D or R

You move the lever to D or R and it takes a noticeably long time before the gearbox engages, sometimes followed by a thud. That can be caused by aged fluid or a low fluid level, but also by the valve body or wear.

Revs flare up

Between two gears, the engine speed briefly rises without the car going faster. The clutches in the gearbox do not engage straight away. That can be caused by the fluid, but also by wear. So have it checked in good time.

Shuddering when pulling away

This is a known Powershift problem. The car shakes when you pull away gently, as if you are driving off with a slipping clutch. Fresh fluid can improve this. Sometimes the cause is clutch wear or the gearbox software.

Transmission service warning

The instrument panel asks for transmission service, or the gearbox switches to limp-home mode. A warning like this can have several causes, such as a sensor, the electronics, the fluid pressure or the fluid temperature. We need to read the fault memory before we recommend any work.

Gear hunting on the motorway

At a steady speed, the gearbox keeps switching between two gears and does not settle. Dirty fluid can upset the pressure in the valve body. The software or a sensor can also be the cause.

Which automatic gearbox does your Volvo have?

Volvo has used several automatic gearboxes over the past 25 years and sells most of them under the name Geartronic. Each type has its own fluid and approach. So it helps to know which gearbox your car has.

Gearbox type Gears Model years Common in
Five-speed Geartronic (AW55-50) 5 2000 to around 2010 S60, S80, V70, XC70 and the first XC90
Six-speed Geartronic (TF-80SC) 6 2005 to 2019 S80, V40, V60, V70, XC60, XC70 and XC90
Powershift (wet dual clutch) 6 2008 to around 2015 C30, V50, V40, S60 and V70
8-speed automatic 8 From around 2014 S90, V90, XC60 and XC90, including the T8 Twin Engine

We fill each type of gearbox with the fluid Volvo specifies for it and set the level at the correct temperature. In the Aisin gearboxes, the filter sits inside the gearbox and cannot be replaced separately. On the Powershift, we also replace the oil filter. For each gearbox we choose the method that fits: a machine flush or an oil change.

Nothing about the gearbox in the service book? The fluid still ages

In the service schedule of many Volvo models, the automatic gearbox is not mentioned for normal use. As a result, the fluid often stays in for ten years or more. Even so, heat and wear particles slowly reduce how well transmission fluid lubricates and cools. Problems caused by aged fluid usually appear only at higher mileage, often well above 100,000 kilometres.

In a flush, also called a power flush, we replace a large part of the old fluid, including the fluid in the torque converter and the cooler. On our page about flushing an automatic gearbox, you can read how the job works step by step. Not sure whether a flush will help with your problem? Give us a call and we will advise you.

From C30 to XC90, from five-speed to hybrid

A selection of the Volvo models we regularly have in our workshop for a flush or fluid service. We check which gearbox is fitted in each model.

Saloon and estate

We flush the automatic gearbox of the S60, S80 and S90, and of the estates Volvo is known for: the V50, V60, V70 and V90. From the five-speed Geartronic in the older V70 to the 8-speed automatic in the V90.

XC models

We see the XC60, XC70 and XC90 across several generations. These heavier family cars often tow a caravan or trailer. That puts extra strain on the gearbox and the fluid. So talk to us about the service interval that suits the way you use your car.

T8 Twin Engine and hybrids

In the T8 Twin Engine, an electric motor drives the rear wheels, while the 8-speed automatic does the shifting at the front. Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate (the Dutch qualification for working on high-voltage systems) for work on hybrid and electric cars. This gearbox can be flushed too.

Have your Volvo’s automatic gearbox serviced in good time

Overhauling or replacing the automatic gearbox of a Volvo can cost thousands of euros. A timely flush costs a fraction of that and can help limit wear caused by aged fluid. If there is already wear or internal damage, a repair or overhaul may still be needed.

We use your registration number to find out which gearbox your Volvo has and which fluid it needs. Then we give you a quote for the agreed work. We tell you first what is included, such as fluid, labour and VAT. We only carry out extra repairs after we have discussed them with you.

Frequently asked questions about flushing a Volvo automatic gearbox

All the answers are shown below, so there is no need to click.

My Volvo shifts roughly. Does that mean the gearbox is worn out?

No. Rough shifting does not necessarily mean the gearbox is worn out. In the Geartronic, it is often caused by aged fluid. The valves in the valve body then react too slowly or too abruptly. If that is the cause, a flush with fresh fluid can improve the shift quality.

With the test drive and the fault memory read beforehand, we assess whether the gearbox is still mechanically sound. That way you get advice that matches the condition of your gearbox.

My service book says nothing about the automatic gearbox. Why do you still recommend a flush?

With normal use, the automatic gearbox is missing from the service schedule of many Volvo models. Unless you ask for it, the original fill stays in for years. Even so, that fluid ages because of heat and wear particles, as in any other automatic gearbox.

Problems caused by aged fluid usually appear only at higher mileage, often well above 100,000 kilometres. Volvo specialists often recommend a flush every 120,000 to 150,000 kilometres. As a precaution, we recommend doing it sooner: every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometres.

How much does it cost to flush my Volvo automatic gearbox?

That depends on the type of gearbox. The 8-speed automatic needs more fluid, and a different fluid, than the older five-speed Geartronic. The Powershift has its own fluid for the wet clutches and an oil filter that we replace.

You can find guide prices on our page about automatic gearbox flush costs. Call us on +31 10 479 00 00 with your registration number. We will then give you a quote for your car, including fluid, labour and VAT.

My Powershift shudders when I pull away. Can that be fixed?

Yes. In many cases it can. Volvo’s Powershift has a wet dual clutch. The clutches run in an oil bath. As that fluid ages, the well-known shudder when pulling away can start. Fresh fluid of the right specification can reduce that vibration.

If the clutch itself is worn, new fluid will not help. We use your registration number and the gearbox code to check which version your Volvo has and what makes sense for it.

Can the automatic gearbox of my T8 Twin Engine be flushed too?

Yes. The T8’s electric motor sits on the rear axle. At the front, an 8-speed automatic does the work, and the fluid in that gearbox ages too. This gearbox can also be flushed.

Our technicians hold the GMTO certificate for work on hybrid and electric cars.

Is a flush still worthwhile at high mileage?

Yes. It can be, as long as the gearbox is mechanically sound. Even above 200,000 kilometres, a flush can improve the shift quality. We assess this beforehand with a test drive and by reading the transmission’s fault memory.

If a flush no longer makes sense, we tell you clearly before we start. Then we help you find a sensible alternative.
