The short answer

At Autobedrijf Willemsbrug, an APK for your American car costs € 50 for petrol, petrol hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric, and € 60 for a diesel or diesel hybrid with a factory-fitted DPF (diesel particulate filter). The € 60 includes the particle counter test, which measures the soot emissions. If your car runs on LPG, call us for the price. The prices include VAT, the inspection report and registering the result with the RDW.

If you combine the APK with a major service, the APK is free. You bring your American car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. If a repair is needed, we tell you the cost first.

American cars are often big and heavy. We have five heavy-duty vehicle lifts, including lifts for motorhomes and commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg. This means we can also take a good look underneath a large Dodge, Cadillac or pick-up.

What do we check during the APK for your American car?

The APK is the same legal inspection for every make: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seat belts, emissions and the vehicle identification (VIN and number plate). On American cars, there are a few points we look at extra carefully, or that you as the owner can keep an eye on:

  • Heavy cars: large American cars weigh a lot. Because of this, the brakes, tyres and suspension wear faster. During the APK we test how well the brakes work and we check the suspension from underneath the car.
  • Lights: we check that all the lights work and that the headlights are correctly aligned. According to TopGear, red rear indicators are allowed in the Netherlands.
  • Rust and exhaust: on older American cars, we pay extra attention to rust on the chassis and the floor, to the brake pipes and to leaks in the exhaust.
  • LPG: many older American cars with a large engine run on LPG. During the APK we also inspect the gas system. If your car runs on LPG, give us a call. You will know the cost of the APK in advance.

Servicing your American car with us

We service your American car according to the manufacturer’s schedule. Anything we do not have in stock, we order from suppliers of American car parts. You know the cost in advance.

  • Following the manufacturer’s schedule: we use your registration number to look up which service your car needs, and we use parts and fluids that suit your car.
  • Manufacturer’s warranty: on most American cars in the Netherlands, the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. Is your car still under warranty? Servicing according to the manufacturer’s schedule does not automatically end it. We record every service and you get an invoice listing all the work.
  • Free APK with a major service: if you have the APK done at the same time as a major service, you pay nothing for the inspection.
  • Price in advance: call +31 10 479 00 00 and give us your registration number. We will tell you straight away what the service costs.

Can you put a large American car on the lift?

Yes. We have five heavy-duty vehicle lifts, including lifts for motorhomes and commercial vehicles up to 3,500 kg. Large American cars and pick-ups fit on them too.

Are red rear indicators allowed for the APK?

Yes. According to TopGear, red rear indicators are allowed in the Netherlands. We do check that all the lights work and that the headlights are correctly aligned.

Do you also inspect an American car that runs on LPG?

Yes. In that case we also inspect the gas system during the APK. Call us with your registration number and we will tell you the cost of the APK in advance.

How much does an APK for my American car cost?

Do I need to wait during the APK for my American car?

No. You bring your car in Monday to Friday between 8.00 and 8.30 am and we call you when it is ready. The inspection itself usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. On Saturdays we are open for servicing and repairs, but not for the APK.

What happens if my American car fails the APK?

We call you first. We tell you what the problem is, what the repair costs and whether there are any extra inspection costs. Once you approve, we repair the fault, inspect the car again and register the APK result with the RDW. If your American car failed the APK elsewhere, we carry out a new APK at our normal rate after the repair.

Where are you based and where do your customers come from?

Our workshop is at Boterdiep 11 in Rotterdam-IJsselmonde, close to Stadion Feijenoord (De Kuip). Our customers come from all over Rotterdam, including Centrum, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Hillegersberg-Schiebroek, Delfshaven and IJsselmonde, and from Barendrecht, Ridderkerk, Schiedam, Capelle aan den IJssel and Delft. You can park for free in front of the garage if there is space.
